Would we ever support a Democratic president who did the same things as Trump?

Republicans would say that if a Democratic president did the exact same things as Trump is doing, the rank and file Democrats would be as supportive of said president as the Republicans are in support of Trump. There is no objective truth. There's your team and our team. We're living in an age of Ride or Die politics.

I would say, no. We wouldn't support a Democratic president who did things like this. Were the Clintons angels? Heck, no, but they didn't do anything remotely as bad as Trump is doing. Also, the Clintons were constantly being attacked by other Dems for their acts.

Moreover, after his scandals, Anthony Weiner ran for mayor of NYC, a bastion of liberal Democrats, and even though he was a rising star in liberal circles, he was rejected soundly by the voters. Same is true for Elliot Spitzer, the sheriff of Wall Street. He too sought an elected office after his scandals, and he too was rejected by the voters.

If anything, Dems are way too harsh and unforgiving when their leaders step out of line. You don't hear from John Edwards any more do you?

It says a lot about the Republican party, Republican voters, and American voters in general that we, no, a plurality, no, enough people allowed him to get this far. Not only in what they were able to excuse, but their reasons for doing so.

Clinto had the Gennifer Flowers issue, but if the other accusations came out before the election, he would have lost.

A speech to Goldman Sachs which no one knows was said was enough for the Susan Sarandon crowd. Oh. And emails emails emails. The bar for Dems is damn near perfection or there's defectors and holier than thou purists. The bar for Republicans is....pretty much nonexistent...as far as how low it is. The only time they lose support is say...if they embraced a minority group. That's about the only sin, and raising taxes. Murder, war, treason, lies, chaos, whatever.... as long as they don't support say..affirmative action or some program that would benifit or help a minority group. That's where they draw the line.

I just don't see the Dems supporting any candidate like this. If we did, John Edwards and Spitzer would be major contenders for the nomination in 2020.

Assholes, yes.
But terminally stupid, erratic in behavior or impulsive? No.

I've thought about this a lot - since late October. Politics is nothing but a game these days - esp. on the Republican side, everything is viewed in terms of wins and losses for your "team". I'm not sure where is my threshold of "I'm going to put aside what I think are important policy issues for this country, incl. Supreme Court appointments and saving SS/Medicare, b/c of my party's candidate's despicable behavior." One other thing I think about is, "Will I be proud to have voted this way in the future?"

It's nearly impossible to answer w/o bias, but my best guess is that if I were the mirror image of myself ideologically in 2016, I would've voted 3rd party or, more likely, sat out the election entirely and let the chips fall as they would.
