Turning my attention to Trump's international trip:
Following a week of disturbing, yet fascinating, revelations in the news, it's tempting to sit back and watch the parade for a while. However, Trump is leaving today for a several-day trip to the Middle East and Europe. This trip is going to create multiple opportunities for the man-child who resides in the White House to further damage the reputation of the United States and create confusion among our allies.
I hope that US media is travelling along on this danger-fraught escapade and that our media will keep us informed of the gaffes that are guaranteed to occur at every stop.
First, he goes to Saudi Arabia, where he will meet with a number of that region's leaders and plans to make a speech on terrorism. And who wrote his speech? Stephen Miller, a noted anti-Islamic member of his staff. What could go wrong there, even if he sticks to the prepared text?
Next stop is Israel, where he has already caused some turmoil by insisting that he be flown to Masada on a helicopter that would land on the top of that landmark. Refused by the Israelis, he petulantly cancelled that event altogether. Further complicating talks with Israeli leaders was his revealing of an intelligence source of Israel's. How is he going to handle all of that? Predictably, he will make many references to his "tremendous" electoral victory. Danger, Will Robinson!
From Israel, he jets off to Rome, where he will meet with His Holiness, Pope Francis. The two disagree on a number of issues, and Trump has appointed marriage-breaking Callista Gingrich as the U.S. Ambassador to the Vatican. Their discussion, no doubt, will be in private, but we may get to see whether Trump decide whether to kiss the Pontiff's ring or not.
Next, Trump is off to Belgium, where he will meet that nation's royalty in a ceremonial, clumsy way. Then, he meets with the EU's presidents, after having championed BREXIT. That's bound to be tense. Then, in a busy time, he'll meet with France's new leader, Macron, having been a strong supporter of his opponent, Marine LePen. Finally, it's off to meet the NATO leaders, dragging along Secretary Mattis to handle issues Trump doesn't understand. Will The Donald once again tell NATO that they have to "pay up?" Who can say?
Finally, Trump flies to Sicily, not to meet Mafia Bosses, but to attend the G7 Summit, where he'll hobnob with other national leaders, enjoy a concert and dine with his erstwhile peers at a formal dinner. His "America First" emphasis is likely to fizzle at this Summit, where the G7 leaders will probably talk about him extensively in languages other than English. Since Donald speaks only English, he will be left to wonder what they are saying.
And then, it's home again, home again on Air Force One, bringing Mr. Trump back to the US to face the music once again. What tune will the nation be humming on his return, I wonder? Certainly not "Happy Days are Here Again," I think. But I know what Donald will be singing, sotto voce: "Nobody Knows the Trouble I've Seen."
Keep an eye on the news, folks. It could be a bumpy trip for The Donald.
