sea lion yanks a girl into the water
The first part of a now-viral video shows a sea lion swimming near a dock in Steveston, a seaside community on Canadas western coast. The sound of cameras clicking can be heard in the background as onlookers marveled at its size.
The animal swims closer to the dock after grabbing a piece of food that someone threw.
It then rises from the water toward a little girl kneeling near the dock, then goes back in. The girl and others laugh.
She sits on the dock. After just one second, the sea lion jumps back, swiftly grabbing the girl by her white dress and dragging her into the water. Onlookers can be heard screaming in horror. A man immediately gets into the water to save the girl.

(7,522 posts)This is why you don't feed bears. They don't understand the line between "food provider" and "food".

(26,355 posts)Sea lions in particular can be predatory, they're bigger than you are, and they're better swimmers. That girl should be counting her lucky stars that guy was quick enough to jump in and get her out of the water so quick. It could have easily ended very badly.
Never feed wild animals. You don't want to give predatory animals an association between humans and food.

(17,613 posts)... I saw them mass murder all the trout in my pond. There was snow on the ground and it was a massacre. That seal only saw a morsel....

(2,559 posts)But still, they are wild animals and should be respected - especially after the warning the sea lion gave with the earlier lunge at the girl's face...

(28,876 posts)...was very aggressive even. And it continued to posture even before dragging her into the water.
I dare say that sea lion does not care for children. It's entire demeanor changed from the moment she shrieked off camera.
Thank goodness this didn't end worse.
