If she stays, she's going to go down w this sinking ship, as it appears to be. Better to get out before she is even more caught up in it. It is going to get worse.
They must have some agreement that she fake it, as I also see her smile when he checks on her, but then she doesn't make an effort, as soon as he turns around. It is all out in the open now. The world knows.

And that, to me, is not "stupid stuff" at all.

MADem
(135,425 posts)You're getting a lot of push-back so you might want to consider that your judgment might be a bit off. This is obviously NOT a "non-story" as it has attracted over a hundred and fifty replies here. People are talking about it on social media too. The video clip is being passed around and people ARE talking.
You're not the editor of facebook, twitter or DU -- stop trying to shut down conversation with "pooh pooh" and dire "concerns" about what THEY might think of US--screw "THEM" -- they're racist pigs who disrespect women and kill people of color and think they can get away with it. I don't really give a flying turd what they think of me--they can go fuck themselves, frankly.
And this "bad for our side" canard is just nonsense. Stop normalizing the behavior of a man who can only be described as a complete and utter BASTARD--to his wife, to minorities and women, and to the nation that did not elect him.
I'm not saying this to be unkind, but every time I see you here you're playing devil's advocate.
Quite frankly, that orange devil doesn't need an advocate in these times. He needs everyone to stand up, point at his SHIT behavior, and say "This is NOT ACCEPTABLE."
Just my perspective.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)I don't really see the point in only participating in threads where I am just agreeing with everything and everyone. I think it's much more interesting when there is a point of divergence, and I can try to present a point of view that some disagree with.
In this case, I think it's a legitimate argument that I am making. Namely that this sort of thing is not helpful to the anti-Trump cause for reasons that I have tried to present to those who have engaged me on the topic.
I completely understand that other folks don't see it the way I do, but I am certainly not meaning to play devil's advocate. I genuinely believe that the promulgations of stories like this across the twitter verse and various media outlets makes it harder for us to get the word out to people that need to be convinced about the serious issues related to Trump.
MADem
(135,425 posts)I don't mean to be rude in saying that, but every conversation we've had, you're arguing from a wingnut hill. The "Oooooh, what will THEY think?" tack that you're using this time is especially irritating and frankly, hypocritical.
You're talking about how YOU want discussion?
Why are you telling US to shut up, then? To be afraid of what "THEY" (they being those racist, sexist, hate-filled Trump-humpers) think?
Really. It gets old.
This IS "Democratic" Underground. Most of us here lean LEFT, not right.
And using the "It makes it harder for US to get the word out" argument is equally disingenuous. Gee look, a right BASTARD treats his wife like shit--but don't say anything because you don't want to OFFEND the right bastard Trumphumping asshole voters who treat THEIR wives like shit...
Your arguments are really lousy. They're not legitimate--they're "Shut up--don't make the racist/sexist bigots FEEEEEL BAD." The fact of the matter is this: This kind of story ENERGIZES us--it makes us see what a PIG looks like, and the more these stories are spread about, maybe some of those racist, sexist Trumphumpers (or their enabling, turn-a-blind-eye wives) will start to get a feeling of ... UNEASE. They'll realize this kind of sleazy, shit behavior is just NOT ACCEPTABLE.
You're in a hole--stop digging. Stop NORMALIZING this abnormal bastard. His behavior is WRONG. His attitudes/views are archaic at best, disgusting at worst.
oberliner
(58,724 posts)And have expressed criticism of his policies and his behavior repeatedly.
I am also a critic of the media and the way they cover things, especially politics. Similarly, I think social media, in particular, has a tendency to focus on things that I do not find important.
My view is that the focus ought to be on the things that matter. What Trump is doing with respect to health care, the environment, human rights, etc. - rather than other things that do not matter (eating fries, touching orbs, not holding Melania's hand, etc).
I think that is a reasonable position, but I respect those who disagree.
MADem
(135,425 posts)"They" are a minority of the population, buoyed up by bots and trolls on "social media."
The way to fight back is to tell them to fuck off. And if that doesn't suit you, log off--"social media" is an optional exercise, like basket weaving or going to the movies--it's not a mandatory activity.
And what "matters" is in the eye of the beholder. A guy on his 3rd wife, who can't even get her to fake being lovey-dovey for 5 minutes in order to create a false narrative, "matters" to a lot of people. How you treat your spouse is suggestive of how you treat others around you. If that stuff didn't matter, you wouldn't see THIS kind of stuff:
Trump's spaced-out behavior on this debacle of a world tour also "matters" to a lot of people who look at his conduct and think "That guy is losing it."

Decorum is not too much to ask for. I'm not interested in their marital problems.
You don't have a fight with your husband at a diplomatic event. I wouldn't act out towards my partner at say, the company Christmas party. The Trumps are essentially at work when they are boarding and exiting planes.
If she doesn't want the job, she can quit. There are no laws preventing her from no longer being our First Lady. When she is on a diplomatic trip she is First Lady. That's the nature of public service.
She behaved like Mrs. Donald Trump, not like the First Lady of the United States of America.
The slap, while I understand her revulsion, seemed impulsive and inappropriate given the public setting, cameras of the world aimed.

(8,685 posts)Trump could be using the child as leverage. You say "grow up Melania" when Trump's first wife accused him of rape. We have no idea what this mentally disturbed man might have done to his wife or child. She obviously can no longer pretend and why should she.
I say - Melania - show the world you hate him too.
SticksnStones
(2,108 posts)But she has just as much leverage now...she's a very public figure. I'd argue considering his low poll numbers, she has even more leverage over him.
She can have instant access to as wide an audience as she wants to tell her side of the story. She's got countless women (and men!) around the globe who would vocally support leaving Donnie.
Is there a court in America that would deem him a better parent than her? Of course not. He barely sees the kid. His Mother's Day gift to her was to not come home.
She can have as much agency in her own life as she chooses to exercise. If she stays because she's waiting on a windfall for sticking it out, well, that's on her.
She could leave without a dime and instantly have a book deal, a modeling gig. It's not like if she left him she'd be penniless and unable to support a child. Many women have no choice and stay in a hurtful marriage to keep a roof over their kids' heads. Many women stay because they fear no one will believe them or they fear retribution. That's just not the case here. Ivana retracted the rape story not out of fear but because she wanted to keep the cash settlement. Hooray for womenkind?
The hand swatting was unbecoming a First Lady. More reality TV than diplomacy. We get that her marriage sucks. We get he's a pig. But she's still First Lady. Do we really have to give a pass to all of the antics of this family?
MADem

It was unbecoming of HIM to make her walk behind him, and then, when he saw the other world leader being nice to his wife, try to copy/fake affection that wasn't there. She puts up with being used, but there's a limit. She knows better than he does what looks totally phony.

(1,832 posts)... but not by much. "The scientifically objective results: Trump does indeed have hands just below average size, particularly for a man standing 6-foot-2. According to various human anatomy websites, the average-height American adult male (5-foot-10) has an average hand size (measured from the tip of the middle finger to the wrist) of 7.44 inches. Trump's measures 7.25 inches."
"According to several scientific studies, this is a definitively below-average hand length for a man, especially for his height of 6 feet 2 inches. A 1980 study commissioned by the U.S. Army indicates that Trumps hand length of 7.25 inches hovers around the 25th percentile of hand length among military men. A meta-analysis of studies from the Georgia Tech Research Institute places Trumps hands below the 50th percentile. And the 1988 Anthropomorphic Survey of U.S. Personnel, used frequently by the Ergonomic Center of North Carolina, places Trumps hands at the 15th percentile. Trump is, medically speaking, short-fingered."

(47,209 posts)It too the second he looks away. To me it looked as though that's who he was really looking at. It's pretty weird no one talks about Ivanka in that clip.

(5,810 posts)I guess the lure of a life of luxury was just too much to skip. But she forgot that once in a while she'd have to play the role of dutiful wife. After the election, that was sealed and her dreams of a hasty divorce went up in smoke. So the display on the red carpet gave me a much needed laugh. There is not much to laugh at with this whole tRump debacle but when one comes along, we should take full advantage of the chance to enjoy a hearty belly laugh. Maybe they DO deserve each other.

I'll bet she wishes she married some OTHER rich, decrepit asshole.

(2,008 posts)Unless she manages to get free of him without being bound by a non-disparagement clause... (Not sure if waiting out the effect of KFC diet and sedentary lifestyle might help her out there...)
Also since the only value in the Trump Organization is the Trump brand, any harm to his reputation/brand is potentially a harm to her child's inheritance... Barron serves as golden handcuffs a bit there.
I imagine Ivana had reasons similar to these for backing down from the rape claim, and they apply more or less equally to Melania.

(135,425 posts)If his name is mud, there's no "disparagement" to be done. If you're telling the truth, you're not "disparaging."
All she has to do is report on things we already know, e.g. his p-grabbing ways, his attempts to seduce that PEOPLE reporter, his PLAYBOY girlfriend on the side while she was pregnant, the names he called their child, and talk about how they made HER feel.
She's learned at the knee of the master--keep him in court, paying lawyers, with money he doesn't have. If he's no value to the Russians, they'll turn off the spigot. If he stops paying the suits, they won't kill themselves trying to make his case for him.

(4,437 posts)Like she isn't even there most times. It's always all about him. He's the rudest ever. I miss that suave, debonair, polite statesman, Barack Obama, so so so much. As does most of the world, I'd imagine.

The body language is clear, not just in this clip. He's a complete ass and they would likely divorce if not for the PROTUS thing.
i been calling her the trophy and ivanka the first lady for a long time......and i notice in that gif with ivanka she didn't push him away....45 is a out and out creepy bastard.

(25,201 posts)I gave him a pass at the inauguration, cuz I figured he was distracted by all the pomp. But this is plain old blatant and rude. What an ass!!!
Friday, he did something similar when he got on the plane, but I didn't see the video.
Now, he walks several feet in front of his wife after getting off an airplane.
No excuse!!!

(17,172 posts)You see, he'd been chowing down on KFC the whole time they were in the air (with time out for naps), and his wee hands were all slippery from chicken fat and gravy. Her hand just slipped out of his! (Reince forgot to pack the golden fingerbowls and personalized moist towelettes, so he was sent back to retrieve them.)
As for not walking next to him, would YOU want to potentially be in the path of a rotten tomato intended for Comrade Fatass?
See? There are quite logical explanations for all of this.
P.S. Oh, and what looked like a slap? She was just shaking off a giblet that got stuck to her hand. No biggie. (Memo to WH: My services as Press Secretary are available for $5 million/month, payable in advance, no refunds.)

(14,168 posts)I remember this incident when he left his wife behind. Its that he has such arrogance that he does not even stop to consider the optics, even if he hates her in actuality. He has lived his life with impunity and sees no reason to grovel with such chores as being polite, and humble, and decent, even if just for the cameras.
Just the fact that his spouse doesn't live with him would be a major scandal on Fox News if the shoes were on the other feet.

(171 posts)Hand-holding, my a$$. Melania didn't want her pu$$y grabbed on the tarmac. She's seen that move before and trained with the Slovakian Secret Service to counter it. Hand-to-hand combat. Womano-a-Mano!
She didn't need to come to Israel. She has her own mini Wailing Wall (Think Spinal Tap) in gold at Trump Tower - red-carpeted - next to her Stairmaster. You should hear the wailing.
Get it right, people.
