HECK: I now pose it to you, sir. Not for my sake, but for Americas sake. As someone who has devoted your entire life to public service, in your own words, please tell my constituents, my neighbors, why they should care. Not just here in Washington, D.C., but in Washington state, and Texas, and Connecticut and points in between. Why should they care? Why do you care, sir?
BRENNAN: Because for the last 241 years, this nation and its citizens have cherished the freedom and liberty that this country was founded upon. Many, many Americans brave Americans over the years have lost their lives to be able to protect that freedom and liberty.
Theyve lost their lives also to protect the freedom and liberties of other countries and other peoples around the world. Our ability to choose our elected leaders as we see fit is, I believe, an inalienable right that we must protect with all of our resources and all of our authority and power.
And the fact that the Russians tried to influence that election so that the will of the American people was not going to be realized by that election, I find outrageous and something that we need to, with every last ounce of devotion to this country, resist. And to try to act to prevent further instances of that.
And so, therefore, I believe that this is something thats critically important to every American. Certainly its very important to me, for my children and grandchildren, to make sure that never again will a foreign country try to influence and interfere in the foundation stone of this country, which is electing our democratic leaders.

(3,305 posts)What we need is to clean up our own mess. Those if us of a "certain age" myself included who have mostly sat by and watched as this country has gone to shit need to ensure that it returns to some sense of normalcy. We should not leave what is, to our progeny. I think what we need a 'grey wave' to break on DC (ex surfer). Generally, as a group we vote, we have the resources and we have the time. I have 2 extra seats in my car and I am pissed off. Are you ready?

(498 posts)Umm maybe someone should have asked mr former cia director why the cia insisted on interfering in so many other elections and selections of other countries leaderships?
I feel like he's on our side but still.. you can't be from the cia and say that with a straight face.

(90,565 posts)...but to ask, as Trump did in his sarcastic way, "What, do you think we're so innocent?" when it comes to protecting our country against enemies foreign and domestic, is to put yourself on the wrong side of the equation.
By the way, what did you think of the outing of Agent Valerie Plame?

(2,689 posts)"Extremism in the Defense of Liberty is no Vice." I don't agree with the statement as a universal, but I get the essential meaning. And Cheney overstepped that meaning when he deliberately outed Ms Plame in retaliation for something her husband had written about his (Cheney's) lies. Cheney, of course, was not defending anyone's liberty. He was certainly under no threat of prison because of Joe Wilson's expose. But that unprincipled POS, nevertheless, saw fit to commit the very kind of treason Bush's father inveighed against: outing an undercover agent of the United States -- and with it, her entire string of contacts in Iran, btw.
Still, the CIA ain't no bastion of angels, I agree. But what Mr. Brennan said is, nevertheless completely true and, well, patriotic, as well. He's seen first hand the efforts of Russia and other enemy nations against us, so his alarum is especially poignant.

Still, we don't deserve to have out elections undermined. Maybe we should stop interfering in others, but we shouldn't use that against ourselves.

There is no justification for Russian interference in our elections.
There IS justification for interfering with Putins election, as he consistently has rigged Russian elections to stay in power.
The United States has never had any candidate engage in election tampering on Putin's scale - UNTIL NOW.

(11,092 posts)There is no question that the CIA has interfered in the elections of other countries in the past. However, that does NOT excuse Russia's interference in our election or any collusion in that action by a US citizen. I'm all for the US not interfering in foreign elections ever again. I'm also all for figuring out if any US citizens participated in the Russian interference in our election and dragging them into court to answer a couple of criminal charges that come to mind.

(13,182 posts)That Brennan is a SECRET MUSLIN ATTACKING OUR COUNTRY FROM THE INSIDE!!1!1!!!
Remember this?
Brennans fitness to serve was questioned due to his supposedly becoming a Muslim while stationed in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The claims fire was fueled after Brennan was sworn in to his office not on a Bible but on a copy of the Constitution.
The rumor about Brennans conversion to Islam coalesced after a 9 February 2013 radio broadcast during which former FBI agent John Guandolo levied the accusation.
