Brian Gootkin, The Sheriff Investigating Greg Gianforte, is a Gianforte Donor

Greg Gianforte, a Montana GOP congressional candidate now best known for punching a reporter, will face one count of misdemeanor assault, Gallatin County sheriff, Brian Gootkin confirmed late last night.

What didn’t make quite as many headlines, however, is that it appears the good sheriff is also a documented Gianforte donor.

Yes really.

According to the ever-useful OpenSecrets.com, Gootkin donated $250 to Gianforte back in March.



If you didn’t get the full story, Gianforte flew off the handle last night at Guardian reporter Ben Jacobs, after being peppered with questions about the CBO score of the Republican health care plan. According to Jacbobs and multiple witnesses, Gianforte body slammed the reporter and punched him in the face.
