(15,696 posts)It's usually a peaceful ride, and the people are super nice. We don't even rent a car when we go to Portland.
This is truly sad.

(8,027 posts)I have a very good friend who takes that train to come to my place. He is someone who would have intervened in a heartbeat if he encountered ANYONE being threatened or bullied. For me this is extremely personal.

(15,696 posts)I know we have to change trains somewhere close to downtown in order to get on the one that loops around town, but I never pay attention to which train is which. I just love the transist system in Portland, and I hate to think of people getting hurt or killed because of random crazies.

(4,187 posts)People don't understand probabilities. Everyone should be forced to take a course in probability and statistics in high school.
The person who says he's not going to take public transportation today tomorrow will probably take it without a thought a month or a year from now. And yet, the probability of getting stabbed will be exactly the same as it was on Friday. People don't think rationally about these things, and it's because they fundamentally don't understand numbers.

(11,481 posts)more and more emboldened. The idea is to shut you up with the threat of violence. So if you're a mouthy backtalker like me and would have stood up to this fucker, get some training in self-defense and especially in bladed weapons. They're easier to carry, usually more legal in more places, and, in a confined space, more deadly than firearms. Training might have helped these two martyrs and it might not have, but it would have at least evened the odds a bit.
