If you don't have anything else to fall back on, default to Simple Greed: If the US pulls out of the Paris Climate Accord, it will probably become more expensive for American oil companies to sell refined petroleum products to Paris Accord members and more difficult for them to take their ships to the ports of Paris Accord signatories.

Oil is used in just more than gasoline, but air fuel, shipping, etc. Plus high gas prices pushes people to electric cars...where they get no cut. High MPG cars may use less, but at least they get some profit from it.

Next, they need time. Their whole "algae" promotion isn't for vehicles, but shipping and air transportation. But the technology is still a long way away. Cars consuming supply put more urgency on them.

Oh and of course, that PR thing....

Exxon admitted climate change is real a while ago. They really do not care what Trump does as long as they are free to "explore", but do not want to be seen as scientifically ignorant to the international energy exploring corporate community.
