Trump Isn't Even Trying to Be President

At least, not in the sense most of us think about it. He has left hundreds of leadership positions vacant in executive branch Departments, and shows no sign of even looking for people to fill those seats. In Departments like the State and Justice Departments, those positions, which must be confirmed by the Senate are crucial to the work of those departments. Without solid leadership talent in those secondary director and assistant jobs, all of the civil service workers find themselves without a clear direction.

Clearly, though, Trump is not concerned about this. In fact, it may be his plan to destroy the executive branch by attrition. He apparently believes that he can simply make statements and issue orders and have his wishes accomplished. He is incorrect in that belief. Instead, without second-level leadership, nothing at all will get done. The federal government cannot function without fully qualified leaders in each department. Instead, things grind to a halt as civil service employees flounder aimlessly.

Even Trump's immediate staff is paltry. He surrounds himself with family members and toadies, who have no knowledge of government operations. They cannot advise him wisely, because they know nothing. Those with even a little experience in government are not genuine leadership material, or have strange ideas that have little to do with the realities of governance.

Worse, as the Trump administration blunders along, making mistake after mistake, few people who are qualified to fill vacant positions or take a place on Trump's staff have any interest in doing so. For such people, those positions would become stains on their resumes, rather than high points. That's because Trump, himself, has no qualifications for the job he has taken. He cannot lead and will not take advice from those who understand what needs to be done.

If Trump's goal is to make the executive branch a useless thing, he is on the right path. However, the legislative branch, Congress, is equally saddled with many elected officials who also have no qualifications or experience in government. Brought into office during the spasm of teabaggery that infected the nation, they make up a minority of Congress, especially in the House, that is large enough to prevent even the Republican majority from accomplishing anything.

The bottom line is that our federal government is in limbo, while the world continues to change around it. With no direction and with ever-decreasing respect from other nations, the United States is drifting away from leadership. Our country is in danger of becoming irrelevant, while remaining militarily potent. That is not a good combination, it seems to me.

Can we fix this, staring in 2018? Yes, we can, but only if we are able to focus on what must be done and work together. At this point, I'm beginning to wonder if we are capable of that. We'd better turn to the job, though, or we will have some discordant music to face just down the road.

That's my opinion this Wednesday morning. Thanks for taking the time to read it.

He seems oblivious of polls showing how unpopular he has become. I think he uses his mirror to monitor how he's doing.

he touted any decent poll numbers he could find throughout his campaign, and he'll do it with approval numbers if they somehow ever become non-embarrassing again.

you're right that nothing will *convince* him that he isn't the best ever, but he still needs the outside positive reinforcement.

he'll go have rallies in solid red states and tout the polls there if he has to.

Do by doing not.

Seriously, I would say that he probably is trying, in his own ineffectual way. This is the closest he's ever come to having a job, and it is no doubt exhausting his attention span along with the rest of his person.

He just doesn't know how to work hard--doesn't know how to learn how--and presidenting is hard work, if you even want to come close to doing it right.

We need to move to a Parliamentarian form of government to allow for forming coalition governments if we want to ever get anything done again.

In the 2-party nightmare we have set up, the only thing that can be accomplished is destruction. It is far easier to tear down than to build up or to repair...and that is being seen hourly under this abhorrent excuse for an administration. Nothing, and I really mean that literally, NOTHING is being achieved or accomplished unless you believe that erasing Obama's accomplishments counts for anything other than petulant child taking revenge on the country for laughing at him over his absurd birtherism and Obama's roasting him.

This government is broken and the people in it now are not capable or interested in fixing it. There are better ways and we need to move towards them or watch this devolve dangerously into totalitarianism in the blink of an eye...

Not without completely destroying the country and its government. While it might be a nice idea, there is no peaceful way to throw out our Constitution and replace it with something else, and we can't achieve your goal without doing just that.

The government is already being destroyed and the Constitution eradicated from within...the type of government we are devolving into is not enshrined in the revered documents of the past any longer...

I was afraid of Trump in the campaign and told anyone who gave me the "well both candidates are bad" line that you may well believe that but there is only one candidate that represented an existential threat to the republic and that was Trump.

He is not setting up a legitimate government, he is setting up a dictatorship. He is not hiring qualified people, he is bringing in lackeys and hacks. He is not making good on campaign promises, he is screwing the very people he promised to help and they are THANKING him for it!!! He is not making America stronger in the world, he is making us align with other autocrats in Russia and Turkey and Saudi Arabia while shoving aside long time allies in Great Britain, France, Canada, Mexico and Australia!

This is not a time for following the last shreds of the Constitution into oblivion...we need to have this cancer excised immediately or watch in horror as it metastasizes and kills the body politic whole.

Desperate measures are generally taken by desperate people. Do you know a lot of such folks? It will take more of them than you think to achieve whatever goal you have in mind.

If need be, when the shit hits the fan and everything comes down to choosing sides...the lessons of Vietnam, Afghanistan and Iraq are plain as day...when a dedicated group of people fighting in their homeland decides that they will not be subdued even unto death, then even the mighty, mighty USA military cannot conquer or defeat them entirely.

Politically, this government and our existing institutions are dead groups walking. We are the first and only worldwide zombitocracy. The Senate and House are rubber stamps for the plutocrats and oligarchs that have seized power, gerrymandered the will of the voter out of existence, suppressed the rights of countless minority voters and the hijacked the entire legislative agenda. The SCOTUS exists now as a political extension of the party in power - and the ages and demographics of the current court lean heavily towards a 30-40 year 6-3 composition and an additional rubber stamp for the wishes of the beneficiaries of the Citizen's United usurpation of the will of the people. We have already seen what value the Presidential elections and will of the majority of the electorate mean...jack shit.

This current government of the United States of America is a bastardization of the intent of the founding fathers and the 241 years of evolving forms of that intent. It is usurped, stolen, unholy and doomed to fall if it is not changed. I would prefer that peaceful means continue to hold sway, but the trendline is not heading in that direction.

We have a broken Legislative branch.
We have a broken Executive branch.
We have a broken Judicial branch.
We have a broken campaign finance system.
We have a broken electoral system - including the campaigning, the voting and the tallying of the votes.

There is precious little left in this existing government that does work or is worth saving...

I had been wondering for a while if anyone else would come to this conclusion. It's a much better form of government, which is why most of the rest of the world uses it. If we had such a government right now, new elections would be called and a caretaker government would be installed until that happened. How we deal with this situation remains to be seen, but I am not optimistic.

He had no idea what the job entailed, he didn't prepare for the job because he never planned on doing the job anyway.

Now it seems that his only goal is to undo anything that Obama touched regardless how badly it hurts the nation at home and on the international stage. That seems to be his obsession.

However, i would change one little thing. In your paragraph;

"Even Trump's immediate staff is paltry. He surrounds himself with family members and toadies, who have no knowledge of government operations. They cannot advise him wisely, because they know nothing. Those with even a little experience in government are not genuine leadership material, or have strange ideas that have little to do with the realities of governance."

you could have left out the word government both times and the word governance and it would have still be 100% accurate.

There lack of knowledge is not limited to how government works, but how anything works, including businesses where profit isn't based upon the next loan rate negotiation and bankruptcy, leaving other investors holding the bag.
