Whether your source is cooperative or stonewalling, a reporter needs to dig into the publicly available information. Confirming or contradicting what a source is telling you or not telling you is a basic requirement of the job. Excellent catch by whoever thought to track Gorkov's plane, but this is what journalists are supposed to do: Find facts and explain to the audience what they mean.
