Michael Bloomberg offers to pay $15 million deficit left by Trump’s decision on Paris Climate agreement

Former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s charity organization has pledged to donate $15 million to the U.N.’s climate secretariat, which will plug a big hole left after the Trump administration decided to withdraw from the Paris climate accord this week.

The Washington Examiner reports that Bloomberg’s decision to have his philanthropic groups donate to the U.N. is part of a broader effort to help reduce greenhouse gas emissions without the help of the American federal government.

“Americans are not walking away from the Paris Climate Agreement,” Bloomberg said. “Just the opposite — we are forging ahead. Mayors, governors, and business leaders from both political parties are signing on to to a statement of support that we will submit to the U.N. — and together, we will reach the emission reduction goals the United States made in Paris in 2015.”

Bloomberg also called for Americans to lead an effort “from the bottom up,” while also noting that “there isn’t anything Washington can do to stop us.”

So far, Bloomberg has recruited the governors of California, Washington and New York to pledge to help meet the carbon emissions reductions goals set out by the Paris agreement.

The 1% who use more resources than 10 of us, should practice what they preach instead of thinking donating $$$ or planting some trees let's them continue their lifestyle.

Maybe try getting rid of private jets and multiple mansions would be a good start. Greenhouse emissions need to be reduced; start with your own first

I'd bet millions of Americans would donate toward funding our part of the Paris Accord.

Could they ever have imagined a situation where cities and states would have to do a global end-run around the Executive Branch?

who helps with climate change over the one who creates chaos. It would be good if candidates got elected because they had done some good things rather than because they promised to do bad things.

He certainly plans to run as an independent, not as a Democrat. His ultimate goal will be to split the opposition to Trump and hope that still gives him an EC majority.

But . . . if he were the Democratic candidate (I seem to remember another independent running as a Democrat) he would get my vote. I haven't been entirely happy with any Democratic president in my life. I have always been entirely unhappy with whatever piece of crud has served as a republican president.

But Bloomberg's most recent affiliation was as a Republican. When he talked about running in 2016, he was saying it would be as an independent. He has no track record of being a Democrat.

Sanders, who you seem to be comparing him to, may have run as a socialist, but he has always voted to organize in the Senate and sat on committees as a Democrat. The last time he ran for Senator, the Democrats didn't bother to nominate someone against him.

And does not represent the views or passions of a vast majority of her citizens.

They know that once we lance this boil named Trump, we will return course to a path that the world greatly admires.

Like the way Obama used to govern. With dignity, respect and a view to the future.
