When Citizens United Met Trump, Plus Bonus Connect the Dots to Putin

Part 2 in my retrospective “Whatever Happened to Our Democracy? Oh, that’s right. Citizens United Happened.”

Meet David Bossie, just your average Republican dirt digger who sharpened his teeth working for Dan Burton during the Clinton administration. In 2010, his group, Citizens United persuaded five members of the Supreme Court to rule that corporations—all corporations, Russian and Chinese as well as U.S.---had a Constitutional right to pour as much money as they wanted into U.S. elections. I wrote about this last night.

Tonight, I am going to tell a story that is even stranger and more shocking. Donald Trump was involved in Citizens United.

“The relationship between Bossie and President Trump began around the time of Citizens United v. The Federal Election Commission. Trump was reportedly very interested in the case and was told about Bossie by a fellow casino magnate, Steve Wynn. Trump was mulling a run for president in 2012 and Bossie piqued his interest.

"When Trump did run for president four years later, he remained in contact with Bossie, and in September of 2016, made Bossie’s involvement in the Trump campaign official, naming him deputy campaign manager. Trump himself asked Bossie to join the campaign, tasking him with running the day-to-day operations and field operations, in addition to participate in debate prep, jobs that had become neglected by campaign manager Kellyanne Conway, as her media availability had started to take precedent.

"In announcing the hiring of Bossie, Trump referred to him as “a friend of mine for many years,” saying that Bossie was “solid. Smart. Loves politics, knows how to win.””

I’ll give you a moment to get your head around this. The man who orchestrated Citizens United---selling the American people into servitude to any foreign power willing to spend enough money---was best friends with Donald Trump. And it was Citizens United that allowed Russia to pour the cash into the Trump family campaign coffers.

More on the Bromance between Trump and Bossie:

“Only a handful of people close to Mr. Trump understood the depth of his interest in the presidency, and the earnestness with which he eyed the 2016 campaign. Mr. Trump had struck up a friendship in 2009 with David N. Bossie, the president of the conservative group Citizens United, who met Mr. Trump through the casino magnate Steve Wynn.

"Mr. Trump conferred with Mr. Bossie during the 2012 election and, as 2016 approached, sought his advice on setting up a campaign structure. Mr. Bossie made recommendations for staff members to hire, and Mr. Trump embraced them.”

Wild, right? But wait, the connect the dots gets even wilder. Bossie recommended Corey Lewandowski to Trump, according to the above article. And guess who Corey Lewandowski brought on board.

Give up? Carter Page.

http://www.rawstory.com/2017/04/corey-lewandowski-introduced-russia-linked-carter-page-to-the-trump-2016-team-report/

“Donald Trump’s former campaign manager Corey Lewandowski acted as conduit between Carter Page and campaign policy director Sam Clovis, the Daily Caller reports. Lewandowski’s introduction eventually led to Page joining the campaign as a foreign policy adviser.Despite once insisting he has “never met or spoken to Carter Page in [his] life,” Lewandowski actually introduced Page to Clovis in New York City “in late 2015 or early 2016,” the Daily Caller reports.”

In case you’ve been living in a cave for the last six months, Carter Page’s claim to fame is that he is a bone fide traitor to his country.

“Page is also plagued by a 2013 meeting with a Russian spy, where the former Trump campaign adviser reportedly passed documents to the secret agent. An FBI lawsuit against three Russian spies revealed the espionage ring attempted to recruit Page.”

There you have it. Five (not six) degrees of separation, Russia (Putin) to Carter Page to Corey Lewandowiski to David Bossie to Citizens United. With Trump in the middle.

Do you ever get the feeling that a whole lot of people have been involved in one great big conspiracy for a very long time? And that maybe when they persuaded John Roberts and the Supreme Court to make it easy for a foreign country to take over the United States, they were already thinking ahead to Russia?

Richard Clarke said something interesting on Lawrence's show tonight that I hadn't heard before. He said the Russians had been meddling in elections in Eastern European countries for some time. I don't know how far back that goes but if they had any degree of success the news probably got around to "interested" politicians elsewhere.
