John Ossoff 51 Karen Handel- Trump 44

Last edited Fri Jun 9, 2017, 09:46 AM - Edit history (1)

An Atlanta Journal-Constitution poll released Friday shows Democrat Jon Ossoff has a 7-point edge over Republican Karen Handel in the nationally-watched race to represent Georgia’s 6th District.

The poll of likely voters has Ossoff leading Handel by a 51-44 margin ahead of the June 20 runoff. About 5 percent of voters are undecided. The margin of error is 4 percentage points.

It’s one of a several recent polls that show Ossoff with an advantage in the contest, although most other surveys show a tighter race.

Fri Jun 9, 2017, 09:23 AM

The plaintiffs request, she says, "is a simple one. And that is: let voters vote on paper ballots."

"The only practical answer is to go to paper ballots [and] hand count them," Marks tells me. "It would be very easy to do. We've had a professional estimate how long it would take -- less than an hour per precinct. It would actually be faster, cheaper, more efficient and far more transparent to vote on paper ballots in this simple election than it is to use the machines." Indeed, with just one contest on most of the ballots in this Special Election, hand-counting would amount to little more than separating ballots into two stacks, one for each candidate, and then counting each stack. It is what we have long described as "Democracy's Gold Standard."

Marks goes on to cite the concerns illustrated, once again, by yesterday's leaked NSA documents and argues: "You talk to any computer scientist, regardless of what party they are, you talk to any voting systems expert, I don't think you'll find a single expert, a single computer scientist who would say these machines even approach the point of being safe to vote on. And it has nothing to do with their politics."

"We must have transparent elections where the public can oversee the counting of the ballots. And in Georgia, there is no oversight. No one -- not the election official, not the public, not the campaign, not the candidate -- no one can figure out whether or not the ballots are counted right."

It will be almost impossible to win without massive turnout. If it's close (like within 5-7 percent), then the GA GOP can and will steal the election.

Plus, the runoff is during the summer break for children, college students and families.
They'll be out of town.

I really think they undercount the determination of hate-filled, intolerant people to impose their will upon others. Greedy, racist, violent, stupid, and dishonest bastards are more likely to vote than are tolerant decent people.

That 7 point spread is not wide enough.

Leads to GOP winning elections. Of the dozens of reasons that America lost the 2016 election, I believe that "look at the news she doesn't need my vote I've got better shit to do" is the primary reason.

The GOP has become quite comfy with stealing elections either indirectly - mostly through voter suppression - or outright, by way of hacking.

That said, he might just pull this one off anyway - knock wood.

And welcome to DU, JB. Always good to have new people who know how to be bold.

Here's to you.

and all of the Ossoff events I've been to are filled with folks in their 20s. I think that younger folks will finally turn out this time, because they can vote for someone who looks like them. Karen Handel criticized Jon Ossoff for moving a couple of miles outside the district so that his fiance can be close to Emory medical school. His response was perfect, that he has a commitment to her career.

Remember when Saxby Chambliss beat Max Cleland. Max had a 5 point lead the day before the election and wound up losing. Because of proprietary code in the voting machines, no one can check to see if votes have been flipped. In essence, programmers determine the winner. Five points is the margin of plausible deniability. Over five points and the fix becomes obvious.

Even when there was a way to recount the votes, scores of paid thugs were sent to intimidate local election boards in Florida trying to do a recount and it was stopped by our wonderful repuglican supreme court. That told me all I needed to know about how much the GOP really respects our electoral system.

This is Republican territory. Therefore treat all polls as over-representing the D vote and knock off 5 points.l, and add on 5 to the R and then treat the poll as +/- 10%.
