Why Trump doesn't want to release his tapes:
Because everyone knows, that if he taped Comey, he probably taped others. And those tapes are records that can be obtained through legal actions. So, he stuck his foot in his mouth, because the other option is that he's a liar. But, of course, once you play the white privilege card in, people will say he was just bluffing.

I'm sure Trump's office has hidden microphones and all his conversations are recorded. But it's possible there are no microphones in the executive dining room. It's also possible that Trump chose to have dinner in a room where he knew it wouldn't be recorded.
So yeah, everything that is spoken in the Oval Office is in a digital archive somewhere. (Maybe even video)

It all came out in the questioning, and it caught everyone by surprise.
I believe that even John Dean was surprised, because he surely would have told them himself if he had known. So once they found out about the tapes they just wrote up a quick subpoena and served it to Nixon. His goose was cooked anyway by that point.
