Trump Impeachment Calls Surge as President Faces Most Serious Scandal in U.S. History

Trump Impeachment Calls Surge as President Faces ‘Most Serious Scandal’ in U.S. History
By Jason Le Miere On 6/10/17 at 7:40 AM

Amid James Comey’s damning testimony before the Senate Intelligence Committee, calls for President Donald Trump to face impeachment proceedings are surging. In the past 48 hours, two of the leading Trump resistance groups have called for the first time for the impeachment process to start against Trump on charges of obstruction of Justice.

“In the United States, no one is above the law,” read a statement from Anna Galland, executive director of MoveOn.org Civic Action. “The testimony that former FBI Director James Comey is expected to deliver today makes clear that Congress must begin impeachment proceedings immediately.

“MoveOn does not make this call lightly.”

Later in the day, another group that has led the resistance against Trump’s policies, Indivisible, joined the chorus.

“James Comey’s testimony confirms that Donald Trump tried to obstruct justice,” read its statement. “That is an impeachable offense. Impeachment takes time but we need to start the process now. It’s time to call for impeachment hearings.”

Political historian Allan Lichtman, a professor of history at American University who gained fame for correctly predicting Trump’s victory last November and author of a book on Trump titled The Case for Impeachment, believes the case against Trump is already stronger than that faced by Clinton.

“We have more direct evidence than we did against Clinton in 1998,” Lichtman told Newsweek Friday. “We have direct evidence of the president of the United States going to the person in charge of the investigation and trying to get him to put loyalty to the president above the investigation.”

He is a gift. A gift the repubs have been waiting for since Reagan left office. They can't re-gift him; who would want him?

He's sacred. He embodies all of the coarse, vulgar, squalid, ignoble aspects of the Republican Party that they have been cultivating assiduously for forty years. They can't let him rot on the vine.

They're stuck with him, just as the hapless recipients of white elephants in ancient Siam were stuck with their unwanted but ineradicable gift.

Every time we think the GOP can't sink any lower, wallow deeper in squalor, choose a candidate more feckless and slimy, they put a Trump (or a 'W') on the stage.

Trump is a distraction to Republican disastrous policy an excuse for not getting anything done. Even White Elephants serve a purpose an excuse not to govern.

we never really got to the bottom of that. As with all scandals, follow the money and this may turn out to be actionable.

He was refused. BUT why was Trump so "loyal" to Flynn when he's never hesitated to throw anyone else under the bus to protect himself? This catalyst to what is being investigated seems to be on the back burner, at least for now. I'm sure that there's a LOT of scandal to come.

The way this guy and his team are fucking up, can you imagine what scandals they'll embroil themselves in in the next year or so?

In a way, we're better off with him in office to tarnish the brand. Pence would be as bad but most likely scandal free.

We want people to forever avoid the GOP in the future. One might have thought that would happen with Chimpy, but...

And that is this: If they fear a voter backlash so overwhelming that not even their manipulations can prevent Democratic majorities in the House and/or Senate after the 2018 midterms, they will draw up and act on articles of impeachment, and sooner rather than later. After all, they have Pence as a fail-safe extremist right wing replacement in the Oval Office, so it's not like a Democratic agenda would suddenly be enacted and signed into law even if we retake both Houses of Congress, with an entirely new cabinet to undo Trump's appointments. The only thing we could do is prevent further deterioration of the Supreme Court, although that would mean a LOT.

They would have impeached Hillary for jaywalking, but they wouldn't impeach Trump or even a Republican President Jack The Ripper unless they felt their majorities in the House and Senate to be in jeopardy of evaporating. An impeachment of Pence afterwards wouldn't succeed because whereas a two thirds majority of the Senate might vote to remove Trump from the White House, you'd never get a two thirds majority to vote to remove Pence unless he was impeached simultaneously along with Trump. That has never happened, and is not likely to happen this time either. They WANT Pence. They do NOT want Trump.
