Parents outraged after pro-Trump messages were edited out of this high school's yearbooks

I can't bold with html code turned off. Highlight here:

Wall Township public schools has not said who was responsible for the yearbook edits, but Superintendent Cheryl Dyer said the district does not condone them, adding: “We are all equally outraged.” ... Dyer said in a statement that the district learned about “an allegation of censorship and the possible violation of First Amendment rights” and is now investigating the matter.

When 17-year-old Grant Berardo wanted to wear a political T-shirt on school picture day in October, his parents told him it was fine. ... His “TRUMP Make America Great Again!” shirt did not violate the dress code at Wall Township High School in central New Jersey because it did not reference drugs or alcohol or weapons. Instead, it simply featured the Republican presidential nominee’s campaign slogan. ... “He just wanted to memorialize what was going on in the country at the time,” the teen’s father, Joseph Berardo, told The Washington Post.

But when the junior received his yearbook last week, he noticed something was missing from the photo: President Trump’s winning campaign slogan.

“Two parents have notified the school district of ways in which the attire of their children was altered in yearbook photos,” she said. “Further, there are claims that comments or quotes offered for inclusion in the yearbook were not published. References to and support of President Trump were involved in each of these incidents.”

I edited the post to note that. With the html code turned off, I can't bold the quote.

Someone somewhere else decided to make the edit. The mystery is, who?

Had the school board made the edit, I would have posted this in the Civil Liberties Forum.

Thanks for writing.

If you are promoting Trump, you are promoting hate. IMO, hate speech has no place in public schools.

You must be new here.

Welcome to DU, but:

a) that ain't hate speech, and

b) even if it were, hate speech is constitutionally protected.

Full disclosure: IANAL, as if you haven't guessed, but I do know there's more to this than Tinker.

I don't keep up with that. Others at DU do. I will leave it to them to advise on what is the current standard regarding what students can or cannot wear at school functions.

That is a far cry from a Trump t-shirt.

Seriously.

The ACLU would have no problem coming to these kids' defense, should this turn out to have been done by a school official.

Has the NJ ACLU weighed in on this?

If this wasn't against the rules, then it wasn't against the rules. If political slogans or political advocacy aren't allowed, then say so and enforce it by not taking the photos in the first place.

WALL, NJ — The Wall Township High School yearbook adviser has been suspended in connection with the censoring of a student's T-shirt supporting President Donald J. Trump in the high school yearbook, the superintendent said Monday.

Wall Superintendent Cheryl Dyer confirmed the suspension, first reported by News12's Jim Murdoch. In an email, Dyer said, "I have no further statement other than our investigation continues and that she was suspended pending the results of the investigation."

Dyer did not name the teacher. The New York Post on Saturday reported the yearbook adviser is Susan Parsons, who works in the technology/media department. Parsons has taught computer science at the school, according to the website RateMyTeachers.com.

The issue came to light last week when Wall High School junior Grant Berardo discovered the Trump logo that appeared on the T-shirt he wore for school picture day had been removed in the published yearbook photo. In addition, junior Wyatt Dobrovich-Fago reported a Trump logo on the pocket of his shirt was gone, and his sister, Montana, the freshman class president, said a

to find one that fits my opinion. This one does the job quite nicely.

"Trump is disassembling our great democracy piece by piece, but these teens have every right to wear t-shirts which celebrate our dictator-in-chief."

"Even as President Trump takes our civil rights away, let's make sure these kid's rights are protected!"
