If President fired Bob Mueller, Congress would immediately re-establish independent counsel and appoint Bob Mueller. Don't waste our time.

(39,343 posts)This would be the 4th person who was looking at his activities that he has improperly fired and the equivalent of screaming "I'm guilty of everything and more" from a megaphone.
They should go ahead and remove him at that point.

(18,612 posts)It's going to take a lot more than racketeering, money laundering, defying the Constitution, and open treason to bring him down.
The whole situation is controlled by Republicans and they are fine with their president doing all these things.
Until Trump's popularity with the public drops into the 20's and Republicans become scared of their positions will anything be done.
It all hinges on making nearly all of America disgusted with Trump before he can be destroyed.

(9,110 posts)...which may be why Trump seems especially concerned about exoneration concerning the Steele dossier.
As you say, the GOP will back that bloated, orange meat sack through any number of crimes, but they might have a hard time ignoring a Russian, Trumpian pee party in full HD.
Because of their constituents, and because Jesus.

(111,052 posts)even if the Special Counsel is fired?
Now, if they shut down the Congressional investigations, that would be another problem altogether.

(7,429 posts)The very integrity of the Constitution is at stake. If Mueller is fired, Republicans either act, or they actively partake in the coup. If they fail to act, the US' overthrow by Russia is complete.

(4,607 posts)It was his out-of-control partisan antics that led Democrats to support abolishing the Office of Independent Counsel. Republicans had been opposed to the office ever since it led to the Iran-Contra investigation that tarnished Saint Reagan.
DemocratSinceBirth
(99,708 posts)There always has been a mechanism to remove the special counsel IF the person removing him is willing to suffer the political fallout.
Azathoth
(4,607 posts)He or she could only be removed by impeachment, or for very specific causes by the Attorney General. And, most importantly, removal by an AG was subject to judicial review. The district court had the authority to override the AG's decision if it violated the statute. At no time did the President have a direct say.
Mueller's appointment as "special counsel" is pursuant solely to internal DOJ regulations, which are entirely a creature of the Executive Branch's power. Trump can order the DOJ to fire Mueller, or he can order that the regulations be changed so he can fire Mueller personally. Or he can just ignore the regs and fire Mueller and call it a day. Who, besides Mueller himself perhaps, would have the standing and the political willingness to challenge such a move in court?
Azathoth
(4,607 posts)You think the firestorm over Mueller's firing would suddenly convince them to find a conscience?
It's only a matter of time before senior GOP members of Congress begin calling on Trump to fire Mueller.
