GOP Congressman Blames Democrats' Anti-Trump Rhetoric for Shooting...

GOP Congressman Blames Democrats' Anti-Trump Rhetoric for Shooting of Republican Whip Steve Scalise (Audio)

'I Can Only Hope the Democrats Tone Down the Rhetoric'

Republican U.S. Congressman Chris Collins of New York is blaming rhetoric from Democrats against President Donald Trump for Wednesday morning's shooting of GOP Majority Whip Steve Scalise, the third most-powerful House Republican.

Falsely calling himself "the most-visible Trump supporter in Washington" – Collins was the first congressional Republican to announce support for Trump, and likes to appear on cable news shows to defend the President, regardless of the veracity of his remarks – the Western New York Rep. went on the attack Democrats.

"I can only hope the Democrats tone down the rhetoric," Collins told radio station WBEN. "The rhetoric has been outrageous, of the finger-pointing, just the tone, and the angsts, and the anger directed at Donald Trump, his supporters," Collins insisted.

He said that rhetoric "fuels the fires," adding, "I can only hope maybe there's something here that would say, 'tone down the rhetoric.'"

And I still haven't quite erased a 'Reichstag' type scenario, from my mind.

It is the republicons in congress and specifically their Dear Leader, who said on the campaign trail "I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters,"

So, leadership and responsibility begins with YOUR PARTY!

I mean, the logic doesn't really hold.

It would make more sense if this was in response to losing (or potentially losing) health insurance. Then Congressional Republicans are definitely to blame.

1. In the immediate aftermath, news outlets will get it wrong.
Everyone we talked to made this point. Details on the ground will be sketchy, a shooter may still be active, all the dead may not be accounted for. "whatever you might hear in the first couple of hours after a major news event, you should probably take it all with a grain of salt," says Andy Carvin, senior strategist on NPR's Digital Desk. "It’s quite possible that what you hear as the news stories the next morning – what they focus on might be quite different than the day before."

2. Don't trust anonymous sources.
Often, news outlets will cite "sources," or a "law enforcement official." "I think you need to be very careful," says Ian Fisher, assistant managing editor for digital operations at the New York Times. "[law enforcement official] could be anything from the FBI to a cop in a car. So you just don’t know and you shouldn’t really trust that."

3. Don't trust stories that cite another news outlet as the source of the information.
"Also be wary of organizations that blindly quote other organizations without solid sourcing," says Fisher. "They aren’t taking a very big chance in doing that. They can always say 'oh, that was them, not us.' So I think that they are a lot less choosy and careful than they would be if their own reporting was attached to it."

4. There's almost never a second shooter.
In the case of the DC Navy Yard shooting, the Sandy Hook shooting, and many others, initial reports included possible second and third shooters. “There’s pretty much never another one,” says Fisher. “So if you hear that, you can almost always discount."

Color me shocked.

This is a tragedy, but I still hold out a thread of hope that maybe it will serve as a wake-up call to some Republicans. The NRA's cash won't protect them from a bullet.

And a Republican now Congressman could easily have broken the neck of a reporter just a short time ago acting out the spirit of Trumps attack on the media as "enemies of the people". Personally I avoid derisive language. Never use negative nicknames to describe the President. - Due to his actions I find that "Trump" says it all. But Trump has always been the first one out there with mean spirited attacks on anyone who opposes him.
