Trump will throw him under the bus, like Nixon did with Ehrlichman, Haldeman and Dean, and he wants to have solid legal advice before that happens. It's also very possible that he knows more than he claims to know, and realizes that this might come out in the wash in the course of Mueller's investigation.

..and he let it be known that Mike Pence knew all along what was happening. He wasn't fired because he lied to Mike Pence. He was fired because he was considered too much of a liability to continue in his position.
