Control this afternoon to pick up a cat to take to a foster family. This little kitten was in one of the cages and he was huddled in a corner, cold as could be. When I tried to encourage him to eat some of the canned cat food they had put down for him, he didn't understand how to eat it--they had put a lot of water in it and he may have aspirated some food. I didn't think he would survive the night, so I brought him home, gave him a bath and saw that he is probably suffering from flea anemia. I think most of the fleas are gone thanks to the bath and good tweezer. I still don't know if he will make it. He only ate a little canned cat food, and I syringed him with a dose of homemade pedialyte. He probably doesn't even weigh 1 lb, even though he is probably at least 6 weeks old. I don't know how he survived this long but this little boy, named Rocky, deserves to live.
UPDATE: Poor little Rocky died around 4:30 this a.m. He started having seizures and crying loudly and shortly afterwards, his frail little body just gave out. At least he didn't die all alone in the animal control. My sister and I will bury this little one here on our property.

(5,810 posts)With hearts and a conscience. Maybe with a little bit of love and a lot of attention little Rocky can hang on and get his will to live going in the right direction. Please update on how he's doing. It just breaks my heart the suffering of innocent animals that goes on in this world. Don't give up, Rocky. You're in good hands. 💓💞💓

(518 posts)This reminds me of our own cat companion. My wife's co-worker found this tiny, scratched-up, starving feline shivering in freezing rain on an island on the Interstate. She took him to her workplace, and my wife phoned me for permission to adopt him. The other employees felt entitled to look in on this tiny cat in the cardboard box and then warn my wife to prepare for the worst, that this starved sick cat wouldn't survive the night.
And they were off by only 14 years.

(17,276 posts)Kitten Milk Replacer formula? He should probably start with something like that. Poor little guy. Once he tastes it via syringe he might start lapping it on his own.
musette_sf
(10,200 posts)Little guy looks like he could use some bottle feeding help. KMR is great, but goat milk for a kitten his age is also good. Cats are able to readily digest goat milk. We rescued a litter of ferals some years ago, and though we fed KMR in the beginning (they were less than a week old when found), when they got a little bigger we fed them goat milk too. Very high in fat, and the fat is well dispersed in the milk.
Also, if he is feeling really punk, a tiny bit of corn syrup on the gums is good to give him some extra energy to help him heal and grow. We gave corn syrup to the runt of the feral litter when he was feeling low... we weren't sure if he was going to make it, and the corn syrup gave him just that little jump start he needed. (He's going on 17 now.) There is reference info online re corn syrup and kittens.

(111,233 posts)Yes, fleas can suck a kitten dry. If he is still with you tomorrow (and he looks pretty determined), get him some KMR at the pet store. He's little enough that he'll need it for the next 2-3 weeks, out of a saucer if he can, with a kitten bottle (at the pet store) if he can't. He'll do the rest and he should be able to figure out canned cat food pretty quickly.
Getting rid of the fleas was great. That will give him the best chance he's had since birth.

(11,122 posts)That's what my little rescue survived on. She liked the chicken. A spoonful at a time on a flat plate so that the whiskers don't get irritated. Our vet had advice for getting kittens to eat with a syringe. Milk replacement is available. This one may not have fully weaned yet. You are a good soul.
Praying for Rocky.

(1,397 posts)My cat disappeared. As I was mowing my lawn, I almost ran over her -- she was lying in the grass and did not move when the mower almost hit her. I picked her up and she cried in pain . . . she had no use of her back legs.
Took her to the vet where x-rays showed a broken pelvis. Someone had kicked her or hit her with a car. The vet . . . an older guy . . . told me to take her home, keep her comfortable, feed and water her, help her to the litter box, and she'll heal. She did.
He told me: "If you can get all the parts of a cat in the same room, the cat will survive!!"
This little guy will survive

(11,686 posts)he would accept being fed with a bottle. If he will take a bottle give that to him long enough to at least to get his appetite on an even level. then you can start putting it in a plate with wet kitten food and of course go up from there. If he missed out on some of his very early kitten care from his mother or did not complete it there is a chance he is still there in a mental sense and helping him finish that step might be helpful. Good luck with the little guy. Oh, at night a warm hot water bottle wrapped in a towel to replicate mama's warmth.
I'm pulling for this little guy.
Freddie
(9,258 posts)Is he trembling? If not then he'll probably survive it. Our poor baby had been dipped but apparently once they start with the anemia it can kill a young kitten. It's a severe flea allergy that causes changes in the platelets. Usually an adult cat will recover once the fleas are removed.
I called the rescue and told them we lost the kitten and they gave us another one free of charge. The new kitten was our very beloved Freddie, now at the Bridge
Please keep us updated!

As I get ready to take one of my babies, a rescue, came by a foster mom of kittahs, to the vet all I can do is thank God for Friends of the Animals. As tight as money is I will do anything to save him. They are all our salvations of our souls and those that harm them need to be put into prison with gang members. They aren't to wild about abusers.

I do cat rescue and many, many times by the time these little babies get somewhere where SOMEONE will step up and help them, too much time has passed and they don't make it. There are so many people who won't engage because they know the heartache that probably awaits.
THANK YOU for being the person who stepped up for him. I know it was a hard thing to do, and I know you are hurting. But please know that you did a wonderful thing and that you have my great respect for putting your heart on the line for him.

(9,819 posts)humane shelter in this rural, NW Georgia county. People treat animals without thought and routinely toss them out on the side of the road, in dumpsters, or just bring their litters into the county animal control, knowing full well that they could be killed for lack of space.
