My sister-in-law's youngest brother was the police officer shot by Jeff Erickson. I heard some stuff about the case from my SIL that they had heard due to her brother's involvement. She was telling me that the FBI generally keep things pretty tight until they have enough information to make a case. In the Erickson's case, at the bail hearing case, the initial charges related to bank robbery. It was looking that Erickson might make bail when the FBI amended the charges to include attempted murder of a police officer. The FBI had waited until the had firm evidence to prove that charge to add it. Bail was quickly denied.

Just because the FBI has not publicly laid out any evidence one way or the other that Trump has been involved in illegal activity does not clear Trump. Considering that it is the President you know that they will be extra careful in how they handle the case. No public accusations will be made and no charges will be claimed unless they have something to back them up.
