There is only one way for Trump to avoid being forever remembered as the worst president in history.

History is going to destroy this man forever. Our grandchildren's grandchildren will know the astonishing magnitude of his assholery.

There is ONE way and only one way for him to prevent that:

He could pretend that he suddenly has seen the light about the fact that the Russians manipulated the election. He could say he has seen new intelligence he had not seen before that convinced him that he might not have been elected fairly.

Then he could say that for the good of the country he was stepping down as a way to protect the American system. He could do it in full patriotic marketing mode, in front of a bazillion flags, regretfully giving up the office because the Constitution is more important than any one man.

And then he could walk away. Though he would always be an asterisk, after twenty or thirty years he would not be remembered much and therefore would not be remembered as the biggest imbecile ever to sit in the oval office.

Of course we know he is too much of a narcissist to do this.

He's already made us miss George W. Bush (well, maybe just a little), and the ghosts of James Buchanan, Millard Fillmore, Andrew Johnson and Warren Harding are partying in the White House attic because they're no longer the worse presidents ever.

which of the four was the worst President. The conversation will be, "Well, of course that moron Trump was the worst, but who do you think was the second worst?"

That's assuming there is still human life on the planet at the end of his four years.

perhaps from the stress of it all, he'd go down in history as incompetent.....but after the nice funeral we'd all feel - well, some of us would feel - almost - if not bad - perhaps reflective
in a sort of general 'gee wiz' way.

History would remember him as the man who wanted to be president, but just wasn't up to it, after all.

No telling what Trump will do, given another month or two, though.

He would have to get single payer first. Model it on the French model because that one is generally the first spot as being the best in the world. His minions would love whatever he did, so that wouldn't be a problem.

Once he did that, he could admit that HRC was not crooked and Obama did not tapp (sic) his phones.

THEN he could step down like the OP said. I might even find a little forgiveness - but only a little.

That's a title that takes some accomplishments, like dragging the country into multiple unwinnable wars in SE Asia on false pretexts. GWB is still the undisputed reigning champion when it comes to "Worst Presidents" in my book. I'm not saying Trump doesn't have the potential to take the title, because he surely does, but so far he hasn't really done anything but rule through malign neglect.

psychic makeup is directing him, he has no choice. Plus, the entire world is turning against him. Even at the meeting of prestigious CEOs at Yale just recently, he got an "F" rating by most. He's a loser in ALL directions. Plus, the world is fed up with his whinny childish voice, looks and what he says. He's done for!

...and rely on voter suppression by (predominantly-Republican) state officials to win a second term.

As they say, history is written by the winners. If Trump lasts until 2024, it's his side that will write the history of his presidency. And no one, even impartial historians, has much stomach for badmouthing a former president once he's left office. Haven't you noticed the near-free pass Dubya got after 2009?
