Mike Pence used campaign funds to pay his mortgage and bills and it cost him an election..in 1990...

Mike Pence was a young lawyer on the rise, challenging a longtime Democratic congressman in a Republican-leaning Indiana district.

And then, scandal.

Campaign finance records from the 1990 effort showed that Pence, then 31, had been using political donations to pay the mortgage on his house, his personal credit card bill, groceries, golf tournament fees and car payments for his wife.

The spending had not been illegal at the time. But it stunned voters — and undermined Pence’s strategy to portray the incumbent, Rep. Philip R. Sharp, as tainted by donations from special-interest political action committees.

“It was a brazen act of hypocrisy,” said Billy Linville, who was Sharp’s campaign manager. “It was a bombshell, for sure. .?.?. Without question, he may well have won the election if it had not been for that.”

Certainly would have been of interest if this had received widespread--or any--coverage during the campaign. You can bet if HRC had done something similar the pukes would have had dug it up and had pre-written stories all ready to pass to their lapdogs in the corporate press.

But--do serious investigative reporting requiring researching the background of a puke, when they are running for the second-highest office in the land? Uh, much less likely. Especially a sanctimonious "Xtian" like punce. Just like his crackpot notions get little press.

Not a surprise to those who have been paying attention, however, that he turns out to be a hypocritical sleaze when he can get away with it.

i vaguely remember hearing about it early on, but IIRC it was basically mentioned in passing. Whereas, if HRC or another Democrat had that skeleton in their closet, I'm sure it would have been turned into a major story that got traction and was repeated throughout the campaign. Hell, the media allowed the pukes to pump up nothingburgers like the emails and Benghazi into supposed major stories. Imagine what they would have done to her with an actual scandal like this one. Especially when the media were desperate to promulgate their false equivalencies between the parties and they had an actual scandal-ridden candidate like dump.

Just pointing out that the pukes have cowed the media--who are ready enough to act for the benefit of cons for their corporate owners--into often blowing up scandals or phony scandals about dems while minimizing puke ones. Of course, those of us who frequent DU already are only too familiar with this pattern of conduct.

remember that if you, a good "Xtian", lie cheat and steal to gain more political power--which you will then use on Jesus' behalf--then it's A-OK. Or something like that. That's their twisted rationale.

This particular story really disgusts me. Something about punce and the contrast between his smarmy pious demeanor and his actual vicious, corrupt actions. Such an effin' hypocrite.

He is so right, and it IS true--Republicans get away with every transgression for which they want every Democrat tried for Treason, and Republicans actually believe that it is a crime if committed by a Democrat, but an act of heroism if committed by a Republican.

Take away Fox Noise and National Hate Radio, and about forty million Republicans would probably wake up as if from some opiate-induced stupor, and ask as one--did I really say and believe THAT???

So many of these republicans are so unhealthy that it will happen some day. I don't wish death on anybody but if the GOP hates health care that badly, that they'll get theirs in the end when they have massive heart attacks or some other kind of illness that doesn't have a cure. I mean look at how fat and bloated Newt Gingrich looked the other day as he insulted democrats on national TV. I'm convinced that the people who are against health care are the unhealthiest people on the planet.
