It was the era of Speaker Carl Albert (a centrist) and Senate Majority Leader Mike Mansfield (a liberal). Dems had a 242-192 House majority, and a 57-43 Senate majority.

Even with all the southern Democrats, it was a far cry from today's neo-fascist Congress though. Plus, the GOP of the 1970s was far more moderate than today's.

Gerald Ford's pardon of Nixon was absolutely a choice of party over country. Ford is reported to have said that he knew he was "going to hell" for that decision, and the failure to hold Nixon's team of miscreants accountable left Cheney and Rumsfeld to come back to haunt us.

Respectfully, presidents don't "reign". They are not kings. They serve terms in office; during Nixon's second term there were many Dem conservatives in Congress.

It just rankles me at the moment because I think a king is what Trump thinks he should be.

Republicans have only controlled both houses and the Presidency three times: in the 1920s leading up to the Depression; during the W. Bush years leading up to the Recession; and now! Not exactly a great track record, is it?
