Here we go: Russia to target any 'flying objects' over Syria where its aviation is active: agencies

Russia's Defense Ministry said on Monday it would view as targets any flying objects over Syria in the areas of the country where its air forces operate, Russian news agencies reported.

The statement followed after a U.S. warplane shot down a Syrian army jet on Sunday in the southern Raqqa countryside, with Washington saying the jet had dropped bombs near U.S.-backed forces and Damascus saying the plane was downed while flying a mission against Islamic State militants. The Defense Ministry also said that it was suspending its interaction with the United States on preventing air incidents over Syria from June 19, the agencies reported.

The U.S. did not use its communication channel with Russia ahead of the downing of the Syrian government warplane, the ministry was quoted as saying.

what we're doing in Syria? I thought his goal was to kill all of ISIS (plus large numbers of civilians) while giving support to rebel groups supporting driving out ISIS.

The Syrians, Russians, and Iranians all claim to be fighting ISIS as well, except Assad also wants to eliminate the rebels (plus large numbers of civilians).

Is that the great foreign policy?

We are backing "rebels" who are frequently Sunni jihadists with goals not at all dissimilar to al qaeda and isis. This did not start with Trump.

I could not name the good guys and the bad guys without Google, maybe not even then. I am not even sure why ISIS is there or who supports them. Do we support ISIS, do the Russians, does Syria? Probably none of those, so why is ISIS still able to be a threat, someone must be supporting them.

The operative word in "useful idiot" is idiot. And that is what they helped elect. They did get the mayhem in the U.S. but they don't seem to be getting anything else.

An armed Russian fighter jet intercepted a U.S. reconnaissance aircraft over the Baltic Sea on Monday, three U.S. defense officials told NBC News.

The Russian aircraft flew within a few feet of the U.S. Air Force RC-135, the officials said, characterizing the interaction as both unsafe and unprofessional. The armed Russian aircraft was operating at a high rate of speed and the pilot had "poor control," according to the official.

The U.S. spy plane was in international airspace when the Russian jet closed in for an intercept.
