I've been seeing the "erstwhile American" flags pop up in stores. I've been watching people lug in their new barbecues. I can't help but feel completely nauseated by it all. There is nothing to celebrate because all that we celebrated in the past has been sold to Russia and the GOP. There is nothing left to be proud of. The dream that was America is dead. All that remains is a Russian satellite state.

(404 posts)We should use the holiday not to celebrate the overwhelmingly-white oppressive attributes of our country's shame, but instead to promote the transformation of America to integrate with other countries in an overall progressive movement. We need to negate the concept of "statehood" and "nationalism" and instead introduce a holiday to migrate our current heavily-damaged Constitutional cesspool to a more inclusive, global democracy, where everyone in the world has a vote for anything. The key is to ensure we resist the GOP at EVERY turn.
In short, celebrating the past is, well, passe. Celebrate the integration into a truly global society that de-emphasizes US-centric colonialism and distributes our assets and wealth to everyone. THAT would be a holiday worth celebrating!

(17,984 posts)It's a celebration of nationalism. Growing up, it was harmless fun with a fireworks display. Now it has taken on a much deeper relevance. It can (and undoubtedly will) mean a celebration of isolationist nationalism for the masses of tRump supporters across the country. The right wingers cannot grasp the concept of taking pride in your country as it is part of a global community. For them there can be no sharing of ideas, money, commodities, or people across our borders. For America to be great again, it must be lonely.
