In a closer race it could have made the difference. How could that not have been addressed prior to the election? That was the main issue Handel used against Osoff.

(7,178 posts)she bought the house and that she had no relationship to the district prior to running here.
At least Ossoff was born in the district and lived next door. Not the case with Zephyr who was born in another state and lived and worked NYC. Not next door. Honestly I don't know what she will do with the house she bought.

(36,457 posts)When a candidate states that they don't believe a person working 40 hours a week deserves a living wage, how the fuck does anyone who depends on a paycheck, vote for that? Is racism so bad that white people would rather not make a living wage, so that black & brown people also don't? We are so fucked, if that's the case.

Not directing that at you, but at republicans.

district just to run the opposition would simply use that as a mark against him.
His explanation regarding his living near Emory to ease the burden on his fiancé who was in medical school was probably the best way to handle that issue.

(56,828 posts)he only moved out of his district to support his girlfriend/fiancee while she was in Medical School. Of course, that might not play well with the older, more conservative voters if he is following his GF/Fiancee around.

(56,828 posts)However, I think the Kathy Griffin incident and the Steve Scalise shooting might have scared a few more Republicans into turning out - just like the Handel aide implied. Horrible for him to have said that, but it's likely true. Republicans turn out when they're scared.

(2,434 posts)Five blocks? I mean really, much of the district is in DeKalb County, which is where Emory Univ is. People who live there weren't buying this lame reason.

(10,624 posts)I'm not from that district, but I don't live all that far away. (Hey, maybe *I* should've run!)
From what I know of the place, there's no real sense of community connected to the district. It's a gerrymandered mess, and Ossoff would seem just as "local" to most people there as his opponent.
If Ossoff lived a few miles to the North, and fell inside the district, and Handel had lived just outside the line, do you think Ossoff would've won? I don't.

(16,369 posts)Regardless of what we think it's just the kind of trivial bullshit Republicans latch on to and make hay over with very little effort expended. His explanation passes my smell test, but if you're explaining you're losing.

(11,175 posts)For this special election, Georgia used the "jungle primary" system in which all candidates, regardless of party affiliation, run in one primary. If anyone gets more than 50% of the vote, that person is elected. Otherwise, the top two go into a runoff.
In the first round there were five Democrats on the ballot. Ossoff far outpointed all of them. In fact, despite the residence issue, he came in well ahead of all the Republicans, and at 48.12% he was only a few thousand votes short of winning the seat outright. Results here.
