to protect him from specific problems, mostly related to Watergate. Trump, on the other hand, lies all the time about pretty much everything, whether or not those lies have an actual, useful purpose. He lies about whatever he thinks might make him look good or feel comfortable at any particular moment, without much thought to the ultimate consequences of the lie. He's a compulsive, pathological liar, not a strategic liar like Nixon.
