Latest Russian Hacking Bombshell: Damning Revelations About GOP, Trump

It wasn't just Donald Trump who dismissed and rejected charges that Russian spies hacked the election last year. Now we know that pretty much the entire Republican party team did so, too – from the Republican congressional leadership down to GOP Secretaries of State in the states whose local electoral systems were under attack. They blithely served as Vladimir Putin's defense team, even as President Obama's national security aides were uncovering a vast Russian conspiracy to undermine America's electoral process.

That's just one conclusion from a blockbuster investigative piece published Friday by the Washington Post, telling the inside story of the Obama administration's effort to grapple with the evolving Russian hack-and-leak effort in 2016.

But, based on the reporting by the Post, it's safe to say that the Obama administration could have done a lot more – a lot more – to alert the public to Moscow's actions. That they didn't, out of timidity it appears – fearing that to do so would be too, well, political – will forever be a black mark on Obama's White House, the U.S. intelligence community and the FBI. (The FBI, you'll recall, started its inquiry into the Russian attack last July, but kept it secret until former FBI Director James Comey revealed it in March – however Comey didn't mind blabbing last July about the FBI's look-see into Hillary Clinton's email server. Even though that investigation had turned up nothing criminal or even especially noteworthy.)

It's a sordid tale, and presumably there's lots more to come. But the Post story goes a long way toward answering President Trump's June 22nd tweet asking: "If Russia was working so hard on the 2016 Election, it all took place during the Obama Admin. Why didn't they stop them?" Now, we know why – or at least we know part of the story.

What we learn from the Post is that it wasn't just the U.S Conspiracy-Theorist-in-Chief, Donald Trump, who denied, deflected and ridiculed charges that Russia was a secret supporter of his (perhaps unwitting, perhaps not) electoral team.

We learn that, in August, when the Obama administration quietly approached Capitol Hill to seek bipartisan support from congressional leaders about the growing evidence of Russian involvement, CIA Director John Brennan couldn't even get top Republicans to meet with him. We learn that when a caravan of top U.S national security officials finally sat down with members of Congress, the GOP – led by Senator Mitch McConnell – flatly refused to cooperate. We learn that when Jeh Johnson, the secretary of homeland security, contacted people in charge of elections in various states whose election data had been possibly compromised, the Republicans in those states blew him off.

If you will read this article you will learn the details of WHY there was little cooperation.

This plan began 80 years ago, the day the New Deal was signed.

The goal? A ProtoFascist/Theocratic Government.

And they are winning or so it seems.

Not not much conjecture there. It only cost the election of a legitimate presidential candidate....whatever right?????

Of course we know know that Russian was actually able to get into election precincts ..... oh yeah, this just keeps getting better and better.

President Obama made a calculation that Hillary would win, and that if he made a statement he might hurt her chances. He had faith that we would go out and vote like it mattered. The Russians wouldn't have been able to steal a landslide election. But the left was too disturbed by the idea of being led by a woman, so they repeated the mistake they made in 2000 and argued that Hillary was the "lesser of two evils" and that voting for her would be a sign of impurity. It's hypocritical to blame President Obama in this. Those who are guilty are those who spent months attacking Hillary and then chose to either stay home on election day or actually voted for Trump to "teach the Democratic Party a lesson" .

That was no time for timidity.

There are ways to go around repug creeps.

Well-placed and well-timed leaks could have done the job. No one in the Obama admin thought of that?

They didn't want to appear partisan, so leak the info. Have we learned nothing about how Washington works?

Too much was at stake — SCOTUS for generations, the presidency, gerrymandering, the coming census, healthcare.

No they're not.

Plus, Dems are going to be screwed into hell again come the 2018 elections. This Dept. of Homeland Security isn't even staffed properly, let alone will they do anything make sure Dems can vote fairly.

We're screwed to hell, and won't be able to vote and we when do vote, our votes will be purged & crosschecked off of voting rolls & Dem voter bases. AND, who knows what the ruskies will come up with the screw us this next time around? They'll be given their compounds back so they can have full range on how to interfere with our next set of elections. The ruskies have more say so into our elections than the Democratic. Treason, thy name is tRumputin and the GOP.

had raised holy hell on this publicly, the scum on the right and the Russian invaders would've had a field day selling the "IT'S ALL POLITICS FOR HILLARY" story for months. If anything, it would've motivated even more rubes to go vote after being convinced that this was all fake news designed to steal the election. We know now what Turtle would've done, and we know that the repukes would've brainlessly fallen in line like they always do.

It's a brutal decision to make. I still go back and forth with it and that's months after the fact.

all last year 1000 radio stations worked to blame obama for helping hillary beat the republican nominee so its actually a factor here, to go with all the bullshit about benghazi and hillary's email server.

all a bunch of bullshit that would have gone nowhere without 1000 UNCHALLENGED radio stations blasting the country with repeated lying that putin's crew piggybacked to victory.

all because democrats and the left and all those progressive orgs prefer to ignore rw radio

and the biggest political mistake in history continues

The only way to get any kind of balance on the radio today is to pay for it via podcasting (Randi Rhodes, Steffanie Miller, Mike Malloy, etc), which defeats the purpose of radio which had always been accessible to all!

I came late to the game, but watched (and listened to) the dismantling of liberal radio over the past ten years or so with great horror. I keep telling the democratic staffers I know that its death allowed a conservative "echo chamber" to incubate and grow almost any lie it wanted to, but they pooh-pooh it.

And who listened/s to these stations? The sort of hard-working, underpaid, pissed-off folks just "looking for a reason" to strike back, which the Limbaugh's and Hannity's of this world deliver to them, at almost every hour of every day.

Radio still matters.

I live in WI. About 6 years ago a local station owner agreed to sponsor a liberal radio station. The only Dem who would buy time on his station was my SIL who was running for state senate. When the the other Dems who were running for state and national offices were asked to run ads they refused. They said his station didn't reach enough people so it wasn't worth the money.

Sad outcome is after a year the station owner dropped the liberal tag as he was not getting enough support from the liberals and he was losing too much money.

as well as dem ignorance.

the rw and limbaugh has been selling talking point that liberal talk failure is due to market demand and a lot of dems fall for that notion that 95% of americans want trumpian lies and hate and ignorance.

i think the monopoly will fall apart if dems start getting their universities to start looking for apolitical alternatives to broadcast sports on. in WI for instance, the uni of wisconsin broadcasts badgers games on 5 limbaugh stations and 3 with hannity i think. even if it was merely being discussed a lot of advertisers would flee. other unis would start getting the message. the monopoly could not survive if 257 limbaugh stations and rw radio in general started losing advertisers. a lot of stations would open up for liberal talk.

It's factually wrong, and diverts attention from the Republicans. Had Obama taken out a front page add in the Washington Post, the Republicans would have screamed bloody murder that he was trying to steal the election. Republicans are the problem. Squarely, solidly, the problem. Dems and all of the right thinking folks need to unite and work to vote out every Republican in 2018.
