Suddenly Last Summer

I’ve taken some flack for dismissing Republican voters as irredeemable idiots. I’ve been told that they are simply misguided, ill-informed, politically naive citizens who were inadvertently led astray.

Here’s what it really comes down to ...

In November 2016, not only did Republicans vote against their own interests, they voted against the “good Christian principles” they’ve been touting for decades. The same people who decried Michelle Obama’s inappropriate behaviour for wearing sleeveless dresses (Oh my!!!) suddenly had no problem with a First Lady whose nude photos are all over the internet.

Republican “church-goers” suddenly decided that Trump’s lack of church attendance was irrelevant, and that his pussy-grabbing remarks were simply good, clean, locker-room fun. The “religious right” suddenly determined that a thrice-married, self-proclaimed serial adulterer was an outstanding model of those “good Christian family values” they have longed-for in a president – hallelujah, amen.

The so-called “Christian leaders” that Republicans adore – the ones who berated Hillary for keeping her marriage together despite her husband’s infidelities – suddenly decided that a man who bragged endlessly about his (alleged) sexual conquests during his many marriages was “chosen by God to lead the nation”.

The Republican staunch patriots, who have always prided themselves on being champions of the middle-class, suddenly determined that a man who was involved in hundreds of lawsuits for cheating hard-working Americans out of their compensation for materials delivered and work done was a shining example of honest entrepreneurship – not to mention being great POTUS material.

The GOP adherents, who never fail to boast of their unimpeachable honesty and integrity, suddenly realized that a proven liar was really just a misunderstood model citizen prone to inadvertently mis-stating facts – repeatedly. And again. And yet again.

The truth is that the minute Trump called all Mexicans drug-smuggling rapists, all Muslims terrorists, all blacks inherently lazy, and openly mocked the disabled, he won the hearts (and votes) of every hypocritical “Christian”, every bigot, every racist, every misogynist in the country. Sadly, there are a lot of them – and we now know who they are.

So spare me the excuses. Spare me the “but, but, buts”. Spare me the “I’m NOT a racist or a bigot” comments that end in “but I voted to put a racist/bigot in the White House anyway”.

Stop telling me that Republican voters are good people who were led astray. They have the same access to facts that everyone else has – but they chose to get their “facts” from FOX-News, Rush Limbaugh, and Alex Jones. They chose to ignore the hundreds of times Trump’s lies were invariably exposed.

More to the point, they chose to completely abandon every virtue they ever laid claim to, every principle they ever boasted about, every value they proudly bragged made them superior to we “godless liberals”.

Those who voted for Trump are NOT to be excused as poor misguided, American patriots who were – suddenly, last summer – led astray by a fast-talking snake-oil salesman who showed up in town with snappy songs and dance numbers that dazzled the shit out of their collective ass.

They were led to vote for a racist, misogynistic, pussy-grabbing bigot because he represents everything they believe in, and everything they admire – and everything they are just too spineless to admit to.

17. Trump divided the GOP......
Sun Jun 25, 2017, 04:18 AM
Jun 2017

there is the "old guard" GOP that still adheres to those tenets you described. Then there are the TrumpGOPers. They're vulgar, unprincipled, totally uninformed, and have taken "nasty" to an art form. Right now I believe the TrumpGOPers are winning, but they haven't yet felt the full effects of being so outlandishly ignorant. Don't get me wrong, the leaders of the TrumpGOPers are intelligent and KNOW how to manipulate people. Ponder the master manipulators of the Nazis, and you have the TrumpGOPers.

Will the TrumpGOPers maintain their hold on the Republican party? I don't think so. Like I said, they haven't yet paid the price of being so willfully ignorant and destructive. They don't seem to have a "grand plan" yet that will seal the fate of the GOP forever. Right now they're content with destroying our system of government, content with enraging their followers into blind faith for them, but they haven't been held accountable to ANY of this. Yet. The bill WILL COME DUE once their followers discover they've been played. And that time might be sooner than we all think. Trump's "healthcare" plan (and yes, he OWNS it now!) will open up a lot of eyes in a hurry. Trump's priorities are quite skewed, and his promises to all the "deplorables" aren't coming as quickly as he promised, IF they come at all! He seems fixated on making the wealthy much wealthier, and it's his number one priority. The "healthcare" fiasco is nothing but an avenue to the money needed to pad the insatiable greed of his wealthy pals.

I think the "old guard" Republicans will regain control eventually, but the party will ALWAYS be tainted by the odor and greasy film left behind by having Trump's hands on the controls. This can only be good for Democrats, as long as we stick together and don't get stooopid.

They KNEW about the Russian connections, and did nothing. No integrity in any of them. Face it, gop members are greedy, self important TRAITORS. Now they are getting what they have wanted for years. Higher taxes, no medical coverage, destroy all safety nets. I hope this orange mistake takes them ALL down with him.

... this lengthy and interesting survey of Trump voters, voted overwhelmingly for Trump too. They comprised 56% of all his votes. They were his wealthiest, best educated and least racist voters who watch the least amount of TV.

Yet that GOP old guard is also the least likely, by far, to ever seek compromise with Democrats in Washington compared to the deplorable voters (called "American Preservationists" in the survey and comprising 20% of all his votes). The deplorable voters are also the least likely to want cuts to social programs.

The deplorable voters get more attention in the media and what they say is more offensive, but I still say that the old guard is the bigger enemy!

None remain. There are no Jake Javitts's or Nelson Rockefellers, or John Lindsays, or Charles Goodells -- or, Abraham Lincolns or Teddy Roosevelts. Maybe Susan Collins might have found a seat at the old guard's table, but she would have been viewed suspiciously as a Republican with latent Goldwater tendencies.

The current GOP is replete with "Party First and Nation be Damned" representatives interested not in bettering the country and the lot of its citizens but in filling the already overflowing coffers of their patrons with the gold extracted from the rest of us. The goal of the GOP is to change the U.S. into a one-party nation -- and it has all but succeeded in that -- the better to funnel the nation's wealth to the super wealthy blood suckers who, in turn, keep them in office and provide them with highly paid sinecures when they leave office

There's nothing left of any reasonable, passionate, caring, capable old guard on which the GOP could build -- and if such Republicans existed today, they'd be excluded from the party and, most likely, wooed by the Democrats.

I will continue to vote Democratic, as long as I am permitted to do so without risk of bodily injury. But I am fearful that a tipping point has already been passed and McConnell, Ryan, Hatch, Pence and the other thanes and vassals of the 0.1% have unimpeachable control of the Federal government. We, the People, are screwed.

What Trump was running on...those were their main interests, as they saw it. Each of us gets to decide what our main interests are.

He was running on: jobs, anti-illegal immigration, repealing Obamacare & replacing with "something terrific", draining the swamp, "protecting" Social Security & Medicare & Medicaid, and big tax cuts. Those things were their interests, apparently.

Of course, they were stupid in believing the Liar in Chief.

But I do give people credit for knowing what their own interests are. Other people's interests aren't always what we think they would or should be.

I have a number of different interests. You might be surprised which one in any given year is top priority to me.

However, I am one who thinks it's possible that Trump did not win.

and environmental regs.

But whatever their concerns, they did vote for their primary interests. Others assume what should be the primary interests of others. But people vote according to their own interests, which are sometimes not clear to others. We have to prioritize our interests, too. So although someone may be concerned about jobs, the economy, the environment...sometimes the candidates mean he has to choose which interest matters most to him at this time.

I forgot about the Muslim thing. So it was the repeal of Obamacare (which was why Trump harped on repealing it on Day One), anti-illegal immigration, and middle class blue collar jobs (trade agreements, environmental regs), and anti-Muslim.

I keep seeing repeatedly that some Dems keep leaving out Obamacare in the mix. Obamacare repeal was very much front and center in the Trump campaign. As was the refugee thing (Muslim), and the anti-illegal immigration (mainly from Mexico). The jobs thing was important in certain states.

The "support our military" militant right wingers sat back and did nothing, and said nothing when trumpie arrogantly exclaimed how John McCain "was not a war hero because he was shot down". As if five deferment donnie has one ounce of justification in making such comments, which of course were purely for his own political gain during the primaries. Hilary does that and she gets the Mussiloni treatment. trumpie does it and it's just the latest reason for right wingers to turn their heads and look the other way.

Patriotic republicans are curiously devoid of commentary whenever trumpie praises blood soaked dictators. Including cozying up to Putin during the campaign, praising the leadership skills of Putin, in comparison to a sitting president. Even as prez, when confronted with the fact that Putin is a killer, simply shrugs his shoulders and says, "do you think we're so innocent"? Must be nice to be a right winger, disparage your own country and have no backlash from your own base. Helps when your base is a bunch of mindless hypocrites.

I started becoming agnostic in my youth, because I recognized the bigotry in my own family's Christian element--against Catholics, Jews, and Blacks, specifically, as Southern Baptists are wont to be. Then along came Trump--the LEAST religious person ever to seek POTUShip. And all he had to do was to placate the bible thumpers, and they flocked like the sheep they became. As an agnostic, I know way more about religion than The Dumpster ever will. After all this is the idiot who questioned two Presbyterian leaders how, if they weren't Evangelical, they still consider themselves Christian! This human turd knows almost nothing about anything, but religion is foremost in his ignorance, as demonstrated both by his life and his spoken words. Repukes of all stripes have followed this lead, as he threw them their apropos "bones" to placate them along the way. So I am in solid agreement with Nance, and I cut them no slack. My stance is that I have mixed feelings about Repukes--some I hate like poison, and others I hate just regular, but they are ALL complicit in this ongoing Trumponian disaster!
