https://nytimes.wd5.myworkdayjobs.com/en-US/NYT/job/New-York-NY/Staff-Writer--Pets_REQ-000718-1

Staff Writer, Pets

Job Description
Wirecutter is seeking an experienced reporter and writer to contribute deep dive, long form reviews of pet products. We are looking for a tireless, fearless, curious person who is willing to go the extra mile to find the answers our readers need.

Tasks:
Research, report, and write long form guides to pet products, from dog beds to cat litter.
Good list of expert contacts a plus, but the courage and determination to track down and call up the world’s best experts absolutely necessary. The number one thing our writers do is research and old-school reporting. The writing is easy once the reporting has been done thoroughly.
Test products hands-on. You’re responsible for researching, identifying models to test, determining how best to test them (with your editor), calling them in, and getting them back.
Collaborate with lead editors and management to come up with new formats for new kinds of content
Engage with our community of readers in comments, social media. We have a friendly, smart community and it’s important to regularly engage in a dialogue with our awesome readers.

Requirements:
2 years minimum experience writing professionally. Experience doing original reporting and research for features or how-to guides is valuable. Experience covering products or services — especially involving hands-on or lab testing — is also valuable.
Pet ownership experience—dog and/or cat at minimum, other animals a plus
Ability to be an empathetic representative for our readers, to understand what they’re looking for when they shop, with the discernment and care needed to make recommendations as though you were spending your own money and caring for your own pets.
Must be comfortable using a telephone, email, Facebook and Twitter, your network, etc. to get in touch with product managers, veterinarians, professors, and experts.
Must be comfortable gathering data and putting it into spreadsheets
Ability to meet deadlines
Ability to work collaboratively and patiently process multiple rounds of thoughtful edits and resubmissions.
Ability to communicate with a distributed team that works remotely across many time zones
Natural, accessible voice
Good connections with PR people a plus.
Photography experience and access to a good camera a plus
Comfort with Google docs and spreadsheets

What it’s like to work with us:
Very collaborative environment. Expect plenty of feedback and plenty of support.
We don’t take freebies, so if you’re in it for the free stuff, this isn’t the right place for you. But if you really want to do people a great service by saving them from the stress of shopping, this is the right place for you.
Work-life balance is an important part of our DNA. We don’t expect you to respond on nights and weekends or while you’re on vacation.
Medical, dental, vision, 401K, vacation and personal days.

To apply:
Before applying, please read about who we are and how we work—if you are qualified, available, and interested, we look forward to hearing from you! Along with your resume and cover letter, please answer the following question in 400 words or less in the body of the email.
How did you go about making your most recent major purchase? Did it live up to your expectations? Why or why not?

That's why you don't see software reviewers who don't own a computer. You have to have some sort of foundation to understand what it is you're reviewing and how it functions.
