Everything The Feds Want To Know About Freshly Lawyered-Up Jared Kushner
In addition to his personal attorney, Jamie Gorelick, Kushner has retained veteran criminal defense lawyer Abbe Lowell to help handle his response to special counsel Robert Muellers sprawling probe, according to reports that surfaced Monday. Lowell has been involved in some of the biggest scandals to hit D.C. in recent years, representing disgraced Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff and shepherding Democratic vice-presidential nominee John Edwards through a campaign finance case that was ultimately dropped by the Justice Department.

Kushner first came under FBI scrutiny last year as agents began digging into former national security adviser Michael Flynns ties to Russian officials, according to Reuters. A current U.S. law enforcement official told the publication that Kushner was one of the American names unmasked in intelligence reports detailing communications between Flynn and Russian officials. This prompted further scrutiny into Kushners own dealings with Russias Ambassador to the U.S., Sergei Kislyak.
Those dealings included a remarkable December discussion about setting up a secure, secret communications channel between the Trump transition team and Moscow, according to a Washington Post bombshell report. Kushner reportedly proposed establishing this direct line of contact, and communications intercepted by the U.S. showed that Kislyak told his superiors he was surprised by Kushners suggestion to use communications equipment in stateside Russian diplomatic facilities to carry it out.

Meeting with head of a sanctioned Russian bank
Investigators are looking into the backstory of another meeting Kushner held in December, this time with the head of a Russian state-owned bank with deep connections to Russias intelligence agency.
Why Kushner met with Sergey Gorkov, CEO of Vnesheconombank, and what they discussed is a line of inquiry for federal investigators, according to the The New York Times. Current and former U.S. officials told the newspaper the conversation may have been part of Kushners effort to contact the Kremlin without the Obama administrations knowledge, and that investigators want to know if they discussed lifting sanctions that Obamas team imposed on Russian companies, including Vnesheconombank, in retaliation for Moscows annexation of Crimea.

(14,564 posts)I mean, it is now public knowledge that prior to taking office our current POTUS has his right hand man talk to Russia about having secret communications run out of Russia.
Think about that? And, the optics of 45's little circle jerk with Russian officials in the Oval Office.
And, 1/3 of the country is cheering it on while another 1/3 just doesn't care.

This is like watching a verrry slow Greek tragedy play out. When it became clear Rump was going to win the primary, it was also clear that the intense attention to the affairs of a president would bring him down and many close to him. At very least, severely shaming the golden Barbie and Ken couple.
Only it's turning out to be a lot more than shame. The hubris. What the HELL did Kushner think he was doing? Was he blind to reality? Even if he was raised to think laws don't apply to him, how could he not foresee this? Crooks do best in the shadows for good reason, as Christie's dragging his father out and around the public square demonstrated.

(8,958 posts)Most of those meetings were after Trump won the election
Flynn was already slated to be the top intel officer in the US (and he held that position after the inauguration)
It looks likely that Kushner saw that as an opportunity to bail out his failed real estate holdings
And the attempt by Kushner to establish a secret back channel line to the Russians is nothing but pure unadulterated hubris

(58,785 posts)hoping to put out some financial fires before they turned into conflagrations that would burn up his family. We do not know. But many top experts believe they are trying to hide something big, maybe a number of them.
That back channel designed to evade U.S. intelligence, though? My god. Even Putin's FSB reportedly declined, which perhaps will save him him from serving a term in a federal penitentiary for that alone.
And Cambridge Analytica? I'm very glad they're investigating them, but they'd sure better be clean. Otoh, if they're not he can go live in the penitentiary with my compliments.

(32,634 posts)I'm sure he's complicit in whatever Trump's guilty of, but he also might flip if he's scared of going to jail.
(That's what Mueller is hoping.)
Personally I don't think he will flip because if he did it would be end of everything for the Trump family.
I think he'll keep quiet and take one for the team. If he's smart that's what he'll do.
So that's why he needs a good lawyer, to negotiate with the Feds and get him the best deal.
For sure he'll get some kind of conviction and sentence but maybe serve time at the country club prison.
You have to wonder what Trump thinks of all this. Doesn't he realize they're coming for him next?
