...and there have been many.
But the one that history will record and expatiate will be their nomination of Donald Trump for President of the United States. Not that he actually won the Presidency, but the fact that the Republican Party actually permitted him the opportunity to win. They should have found a way to stop him. They knew exactly the type of person he was and they did nothing to stop him. Instead, they nourished him and built him up to defeat Hillary Clinton.
It is not Hillary Clinton's fault that he is sitting in the White House today. The Republican Party created the environment and the conditions for a person like Donald Trump to take over their Party. Their lack of principles and their lack of empathy led them down a dark road of racism and misogyny, many of them cheered on by the super partisans of talk radio.
If blame must be placed, it is at the feet of the Republican Party. They had many chances to pull our country together, but each time, they chose division over unity. There is a lesson to learn and a price to pay whenever we put greed and power over the needs of the people.

Pretty telling when an organization will look past certain and obvious character flaws/poor skills required just to get what they want.

(19,187 posts)the better part of 25 years denigrating Hillary Clinton, to make her appear as the biggest crook in the world. Many, MANY people bought that hard sell by the GOP, simply because of the constant repetition of the lies. The GOP has never had a person who could come close to her hard work and dedication to public service. So, as usual, they had to poison the well.
If there is a god, and that god LOVES the United States as much as the GOP says, he/she/it would never have allowed a scoundrel like Donald Trump to completely ruin the U.S. while overlooking Hillary Clinton. I don't believe in their god, so I think this part of it is complete bullshit.
The GOP DID pave the way for Trump and his crime family to infest our government. The dishonest GOP, the media's constant coverage of ANYTHING "Trump", along with the help of the "godless" Russians, made it a fait accompli.
