Schemes and Dreams Will Not Reverse 2016

That race is finished. It ended badly, and everyone's pissed off about it. But, it's over. Frankly, unless Donald Trump resigns, he's going to continue to live in the White House and infuriate us all. So, what are our options? There is only one option, really.

We have an election coming up in 2018 and another in 2020. Instead of looking back over our shoulders, we should crank our heads around and look straight ahead toward those two elections.

In 2018, we can regain control of at least one house of Congress, probably the House of Representatives. It will be very difficult to do, since there are gerrymandered districts and a Republican Party that is fighting for its life and willing to use illegal tactics to win. But, it can be done. It will take a total focus on the task, starting right now, but it can be done. With control of the House of Representatives, we can keep Donald Trump, or whoever replaces him if he resigns, in check to a fairly large degree.

Then, two years later, we hold another election. In 2020, we can elect a new President - one from our own party. We can also solidify and increase our majority in the House and regain majority control of the Senate. Again, it will be devilishly hard, but we can do it. If we do all of those things, we will have finally reversed the calamity of 2016 and can begin correcting the harm done by the disaster that was the 2016 election.

Or, we can continue to look backwards and continue to bicker among ourselves and accomplish exactly nothing. It's our choice. What happens going forward depends almost 100% on the choice we make. I suggest we make the choice of putting every bit of energy and time we can muster in reversing the 2016 election in 2018 and 2020. In the meantime, we can build new coalitions and reverse the intra-party bickering that cost us the 2016 election by recognizing and fighting together for an opportunity to return to power.

That's my opinion. Thanks for reading it. I remain hopeful that we'll realize what we need to do and set about doing exactly that.
