When crimes go unpunished, when greed is all that matters, we get where we are now

Watergate at least led to the end of Nixon as president.

But - Reagan and the Contra affair, Dubya and so much (invasion of Iraq, the outing of Plame, the outcomes of the 00 and 04 elections) - it emboldens those who think that there are no laws and it is all about their greed, power and hubris. It leads to apathy and resignation. It leads to winning at all costs - party over people, over country

I am sure that one day (perhaps some of us now), a direct line will be drawn from our recent past history to trump....whose election, ironically, was due to an unspeakable crime.

How long has it been since election night - 8 months? I am no less nauseous, outraged, bewildered than I was when it became clear what was about to happen.

As we contemplate Independence day tomorrow, all I wish for is that our country could be independent from that asshole who is degrading the white house.

Just one thing more - despite all of the the outrage, the many stories in the media - why would anyone expect the asshole to stop anything he is doing or wants to do? He is emboldened - recent history tells him that he won't be touched.

1. And the thinking that gets me is that by not punishing criminal presidents it is somehow better

for the country.

The whole but the country has been through enough, do we really want to burden them with a trial? (you know, wouldn't want to burden the people with justice, poor dears. Wouldn't want to diminish the office of president by arresting a president that has diminished the office of president by committing crimes while in office.)

I am living a split life right now - utterly depressed by the politics, utterly delighted with my step away from the corporate world into a retirement of writing and speaking, and time with my wife and pets and garden....my mood is a daily yo yo!

I didn't find your post to be a downer. I'm weird that way, I guess.

I think you're so very correct, alas.

He won't be touched. Let that sink in.

Somehow, my mind refuses to grasp that, to accept it. That would put us over the brink.

Aren't we somehow better than that?

This is a description of half of the country. Such love and high morals these so called Christians have for us all. It gets worse and worse and it is killing our country locally and nationally. Selfish bastards need to get off their high horses and join reality for a change. Probably won't happen in my lifetime. I am somber on our country's (and mine) birthday.

and accountability.

Watergate was a domestic political scandal - dozens of people ended up prosecuted and Nixon was forced to resign.

Iran Contra was an international scandal involving the illegal sale of arms to IRAN to fund the Contras - Reagen was safeguarded from any responsibility and a handful of people were prosecuted.

Bush II lied the country into Iraq, costing the lives of thousands of our soliders, tens of thousand critically injured, billions of dollars wasted - absolutely no one held accountable.

I noted this long before 45 came down the escalator.

And, now ... More scandals than we can start to mention, highlighted by the fact that our country is fully compromised by fucking Russia.

Cheney outing Valerie Plame.

The illegal Iraq war and lying about WMD to the world.

Not a single significant consequence to serve as a deterrent.

And thus, here we are.
