which is not hard to do nor is it the first time but I'm needing clarification on the video of Trump and the CNN logo imposed on the other person. I can't tell, are people saying he didn't post that? Why is who made the meme so important all of a sudden? Did CNN make it? I'm completely lost............

(3,331 posts)He got it from a Trumpanzee sub-reddit. The person who made it is also a racist, anti-Semitic, xenophobic bigot. So Trump associated himself with this person.
CNN found out who this person was and interviewed him. They wrote an article saying that they weren't going to release his name and that was their right to or to not do.
Then the right was like, OMG, CNN is blackmailing this poor guy. Which they aren't.
And the feud continues.

(15,563 posts)Trump himself posted the vid. CNN, in an attempt to discover who made the video (though don't know why they would ask that question first) discovered somehow who did make it, found that person to be all those things you described them as, and then didn't release his name?

(1,954 posts)CNN found out who this guy was and informed him of that fact. The point of contention (online) right now is how CNN worded this breaking information and how they found the guy.
CNN went through the poster's Reddit postings, obtained biographical information, found his identity through social media, then let him know that they knew who he was. Only after that did the guy apologize online, whereupon CNN made it known that they -would- publish his personal identity and information if he created content similar to that again.
The reason it's such a thing right now is that it reads -very- poorly on CNN, all things considered. On both the right and the left, the expectation of privacy on the net is something that is held very dearly (mostly). There's a nice chunk of kickback against CNN for this, rightfully so.
The poster above has a few details wrong which seem to put a passive face on aggressive media coercion. While this whole issue may fall short of blackmail, it certainly reeks of trashy journalism. CNN broke more than a few rules of journalistic integrity during all of this.

(33,284 posts)and then CNN said that if said Neo-Nazi troll started that shit back up, they'd release his name. just his name.
and that's when the Alt-Righties and their ilk went into hysterics about "Doxxing", which they love to employ against anyone who crosses them.

(58,724 posts)CNN is not publishing "HanA**holeSolo's" name because he is a private citizen who has issued an extensive statement of apology, showed his remorse by saying he has taken down all his offending posts, and because he said he is not going to repeat this ugly behavior on social media again. In addition, he said his statement could serve as an example to others not to do the same.
CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change.
