called in some favors from some people he knew in fbi to see if it was real. After some discussion they determined it was real and ntercept went with the story. It was in those interactions that nsa was tipped off that a leak occurred.

Greenwald had the document for at least a month before he published the story. So a lot of people who were in the know could have seen it during that time.
