General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsTo what extent do you think the Democratic Party represents the interests of the lower middle class?
I'm talking about people who make between 25-40k per year or the equivalent in places with high costs of living. What do you think the Democratic Party offers these people who are working but living on the edge? This isn't a loaded question that I think I have the answer to. I want to know what people think, and if you can, provide evidence.
Also, does anyone know of any polls that show how people in this bracket voted in the last election?

(16,646 posts)We try, but we don't always succeed. But we work on issues like homelessness and poverty. We've been weaker on labor unions these days. Kinda screwed up a bit on the whole recovery effort.

(2,117 posts)Homelessness and poverty are issues for the people below the lower middle class. I definitely see Democrats fighting for people in that bracket. But what seems less visible are the ideas aimed at the lower middle class. Not that there are no ideas, but they seem to get overshadowed by the other ideas aimed at the very poor. Unions are definitely connected to the lower middle class. That seems to be one area where Democrats could strengthen their focus.

(30,481 posts)Democrats are the only major party to favor the redistribution of wealth. They are the only party to support decreasing the income disparity in the country. It goes on and on.

(5,240 posts)jobs available in the US become service jobs. I think the percentage now is 60+ %. The republicans chose the rich, but know how to play on the fears and insecurities of people. The Dems are trying to figure it out, but it is a real problem that has no easy answers in a global economy.

(36,106 posts)That your question is posted on a forum existing to support the Democratic party and its candidates...well, I'm gonna go ahead and guess you don't think the interests of working classes are being represented by the Democrats
Not agreeing or disagreeing with you - it just seems you're answering your own question

(11,949 posts)You pretty much telegraph that you are not one of 'these people'.
I think the Democratic Party does pretty well by 'these people'. But the Democratic Party members also live in the real world and know that many of 'these people' often vote against their own interest and that if we run on 'Big Government' running everything we will lose. Even thought many of us, including this member, believe we need a much stronger government making sure that the bountiful fruits of Capitalism are shared with the laborers who actually do the work.
But curious minds want to know...what is your opinion? This is a discussion forum. Asking a question is not really discussion. Pray tell, what are your thoughts on how well the Democratic Party is representing the interest of 'these people'?

(2,117 posts)You seem more interested in playing psychologist with my choice of words than actually answering the question. I am in the bracket in question. Thus, my interest in the answer. If you don't know the answer, I would find that disturbing. But since you are clearly a devout Democrat who should know in detail the answer to the OP, perhaps you'll be willing to offer a detailed respone?

What do you think people in that income bracket need? When was the last time you saw a Republican advocating for affordable housing?

(10,866 posts)We need to change that, we must return to our charter of being the party of the common man. Yes, that means those in the bottom half as well as those above. We all know someone who is in that situation - perhaps we have been there too. What are their concerns? Any different than ours? If not, craft the message to resonate in their world. If their concerns are different find out why and change our perspective to meet their needs too.

(2,117 posts)focuses a lot on the extremely poor, but I wonder whether there is enough focus on the huge numbers of Americans that are on the edge of poverty. Making enough to live, not relying on government for anything, but struggling.. I know that the Party has better ideas than the GOP but I'm not sure there's enough focus, and certainly there is a perception among many that the Democratic Party has become more focused on the highly educated, globalism, or the very poor. I think this is a problem that needs to be fixed.
