Little-Known Challengers Seek To Unseat Bernie Sanders In 2018

Little-Known Challengers Seek To Unseat Bernie Sanders In 2018

A Bridport Democrat who’s never run for public office says he’s mounting a “David vs. Goliath” campaign to oust Bernie Sanders from the U.S. Senate in 2018.

Jon Svitavsky, 59, says he believes that Sanders’ “divisive” politics have fractured the Democratic Party nationally, and paved the way for the rise of Republican President Donald Trump.

“I don’t have any money. I’ve never aspired for office or power,” Svitavsky said in a telephone interview Thursday. “But darn it, I think Sanders has hurt our country very badly with what he’s done.”

Svitavsky announced his campaign on social media Wednesday, though he may not be the only challenger to have entered the 2018 race for U.S. Senate in Vermont. Folasade Adeluola, a resident of Greenfield, Indiana, filed a “statement of organization” with the Federal Elections Commission on June 6, indicating she’s seeking to challenge Sanders as well.

I'm going to watch this closely and determine which challenger to back. With luck, some big money backing will come into play and make this a REAL race in the GE to put a Democrat in that Senate seat currently held by an Independent!

When I go over into Vermont every day I see cars all over the place with Bernie bumper stickers. Some even have his old stickers from when he ran for the House. He's beloved.

I doubt either other potential candidate will gain any traction, particularly the one from another state.

It's also extremely difficult to unseat career politicians.

Sanders is big money and that will be difficult to overcome. People like Turner might even use their organization to back the Republican. I would love to have a solid Democrat in that seat but with the Bro's it might just be handed over to a republican.

He has made deals with the party from very early on in his career. I think they would take more of a hands off approach in a primary at this point. That still wouldn't overcome Sanders being a well funded career politician.

Since he opposes Sanders' politics?

Sounds like a quality "Democrat", I'm sure the GOP will be happy to give him money.

... and I totally agree with Jon Svitavsky's assessment of what paved the way for Trump. Svitavsky is right on target.
