Joe.My.God: 60 House Democrats Fail To Sign On To Court Challenge To Overturn DOMA

Fucking cowards or closeted bigots -- take your pick.

60 House Democrats Fail To Sign On To Court Challenge To Overturn DOMA

< . . . >

Chris Geidner reports at Buzzfeed:

One third of House Democrats broke with their leaders today and kept their names off a brief urging a federal appeals court to strike down the Defense of Marriage Act, which limits federal recognition of marriages to those between one man and one woman. The majority of Democrats joined House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi's argument, which her office described in a news release as "the Democratic Members' brief," but the break among Democrats offers a glimpse at remaining divisions inside the party. Pelosi, joined by Minority Whip Steny Hoyer (D-MD) and 130 other House Democrats, told the federal appeals court in California that they believe Karen Golinski should succeed in her lawsuit challenging the constitutionality of DOMA's federal definition of "marriage" and "spouse."

(By the way, the post to which you respond is precisely the type of stuff that went on in DU2 and chased away many of our GLBT brothers and sisters here, which we have discussed previously. Same shit, different day. And thanks to the jury for voting to hide.)

supposedly.

The latest rumor is that he plans to "retire" and serve out this session, leaving the slot open for an appointed candidate.

Voters in those districts need to contact their legislators and tell them what they think about this.

the number is actually 43, not 60.

17 on the list (at the link, the names are italicized) are co-sponsors of the Respect for Marriage Act.

but sadly they will be able to say, with absolute correctness, that they are reflecting the will of their districts. The only two districts we won both voted our way (Price and Miller). That said I am very surprised at both Watt and Butterfield who are both in very safe districts and whose districts may well have been close to our way on the issue. Watt represents Charlotte where we won narrowly, while Butterfield is getting alot of Durham added to his where we won big.

Given the intense upcoming election season, they are likely unwilling to put their name on ANYTHING even REMOTLY polarizing for fear of losing votes. Politics nowadays is not about representing constituents or leading a nation... it's about building a pocket-lining political career and getting reelected year after year. Most politicians would proudly proclaim the sky is brown if they tought it would help their polling numbers.
