I figured the sweet talk would only last through his introduction.

(8,556 posts)They aren't conservatives for their health. They genuinely believe that conservative policies are better for the country, minorities included. That's especially true for elites like Romney, who lack the ground-level view of the effects of conservative policies.
Believe it or not, many people really do believe what they say.
I don't think the Mittster really believes that he can get more black votes, but I'd be surprised if he didn't genuinely believe that conservatism is better for the black community. Just because it's wrong doesn't mean he doesn't really think that.

(8,556 posts)Most people think their way is best, or they wouldn't believe it in the first place. It's easy to overlook reality when you're convinced you're right.
Mitt isn't actually the best case for this, since he has a record of changing his positions. But when it comes to economics, he probably does really believe what he says. And why wouldn't he? His way has certainly worked for him.

(30,439 posts)The elite conservatives KNOW their policies are not better for the African American community. They KNOW their own goals which is to benefit the 1 percent and turn everyone else into minimum wage slaves in the name of profit.
The other people who are conservatives watch Faux News and listen to Rush Limbaugh so they have certain talking points shoved down their throat in order to get them to vote against their best interests.
So....you have the elite conservatives who know what they're doing and you have the brainwashed boobs who listen to Rush Limbaugh and watch Faux News.

(30,885 posts)He started off with this warm and fuzzy thing about how, years ago, many of us "never would have expected" to see an African American in the White House, then segued into a screed about how life has only gotten worse for African Americans since.

Let's go even further; does a moderate even stand a chance in the modern red-meat-gulping GOP?

(67,104 posts)magically transform the economy into this great job machine. He mouths a lot of words, but I've heard no credible action plan from Romney.
Now, granted, I don't listen to him much, but I would have thought I would have at least have heard word bites by now on some plan by the talking heads. And, I thought Boner was supposed to have fixed everything by now with his bagger house. Yep, that sure worked well.
If Romney were to get in, with a herd of teabagger majorities across congress, IMO Americans are getting what they deserve for some being so damn ignorant. The problem is, it will take all of us down. A republican majority would be fully capable of taking most Americans back to the Great Depression, while others sit behind gated communities watching deaths and despair roll across the nation feeling great about themselves. Then we could be truly a 3rd world nation. I guess then the R's will claim victory for having destroyed the US.

(32,079 posts)The President's election brought out enough of these crazies in the 2010 election that we are now stuck with some of the worst, most destructive Congresmen/women, Senators, governors, and other state officials in this country's history. I'm not blaming the President for this, although his own party is party responsible for it through their cowardice, and through the apathy of its voters.

(30,885 posts)...that Romney gave the same speech to the NAACP that he's given to every other audience.
There are pros and cons to that approach.
On one hand, I don;t believe that anyone should "pander"...change their basic message to "win points"...no matter where they're speaking.
On the other hand, I feel that it is the responsibility of any speaker to take the basic needs and interests of their audience into consideration, and to address them in one form or another in their speech. It doesn't mean they have to compromise their principles. It's just a show of common courtesy: "You invited me here, I appreciate it, I know these areas are of concern / interest to you, and I'd like to address them."
I agree with what many are saying, that Romney may have literally "spoken to" attendees at an NAACP meeting, but he was really "talking to" the cameras, his donors, and the "base" of the Republican party. He was demonstrating his ability to stay on subject, and the NAACP were simply a means to an end.
I've spoken on a number of occasions at local Kiwanis, Rotary, and Lions Clubs. I always make a point of using the second option I described above. I choose a subject I believe would be interesting and informative and always do whatever I can to "personalize" it for my audience.
