This was probably anticipated by the campaign.

I think he and most elite conservatives really do think they are better for the black community.

The question is, do they think they have any chance of convincing people of that? That's where there is probably a divide among conservative strategists. Many of the clear-headed ones would say no, while some of the less realistic ones might say yes.

The thing is, the candidates themselves are often so ego-driven, that they believe that they will be the ones to buck tradition and history and completely transform the game, because they are just that awesome. I imagine part of a strategists' job is to find a polite way to manage this kind of thing so it doesn't make the candidate look truly ridiculous.

Everyone else did....

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/OTUS/romney-says-he-expected-to-be-booed-at-naacp/story?id=16753886#.T_3gAZHNkYI

Avis Jones-DeWeever, the executive director of the National Council of Negro Women, said Romney had accomplished a "calculated political ploy" by signaling to conservatives that he's willing to tell backers of the health law that he wants to cut it.

"That was like a victory lap on Fox News," she said. "That was exactly what he went there intending to do."

Critics in Obama's camp charged immediately after the speech that Romney planned to be booed in an effort to charge up Republican voters.

"I believe he included that part of the speech intentionally," Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed said. "And I think the audience responded appropriately."

Reed, on a conference call organized by the Democratic National Committee after Romney's speech, accused Romney of staging a "political stunt" that was aimed more at Republicans who weren't in the room.

"He wasn't speaking to the NAACP audience at all," Reed said. "To his base it will make him look strong, but he never stands up to anybody else."

Wed Jul 11, 2012, 11:06 AM
Jul 2012

He's not addressing the NAACP to get the votes of the NAACP attendees.

He's getting the reaction from the NAACP which his campaign would prefer to get, in order to prove that "African Americans are only voting on race" ergo "White people should vote for Mitt to balance that out".

And any so-called "independent" who might not think that I am a "person" and couldn't give a shit about my concern for improvements to healthcare because "<I'm> going to die anywhere because all black people are poor, monkey criminals who are either in jail or belong in jail", then fuck them too.

It's ironic that certain apparent "non-people" are paternalistically told NOT to express disgust with a RW hack running for President whereas others on DU flame away 24/7 bashing the current Democratic administration's policies right along with the right-wing lunatics from Free Republic.

"certain apparent "non-people" are paternalistically told NOT to express disgust"

Nobody - NOBODY - said that.

Romney has to compete with third party and stay-at-home racist white voters. No, those voters wouldn't vote for Obama in the first place, but that does NOT mean they will vote, and it does NOT mean they will vote for Romney. A lot of third parties are going to nominate Ron Paul as their candidate and suck some of that white racist vote off.

Romney also has to do damage control with reactionary voters who are put off by his religion and by the offshore money thing. Romney needs to be seen by these reactionary voters as another "victim of black racism" in order to motivate that vote to (a) get out, and (b) vote for him.

It is WHY he is speaking to the NAACP. That Romney would get a cold reception there is, of course, a given. He was, at all relevant times, an ordained official of a church which didn't let African Americans in until 1978.

What I am saying is that Romney went there IN ORDER to get a negative reaction. That he got one is no surprise, and no fault of the audience.

He's getting the reaction his campaign wanted.

He is so used to adulation, he thinks he can say anything. He says what sounds like he understands some of what AAs deal with, but he says it with a palpable sense of superiority. And then saying he will repeal Obamacare? Does he really think that just because people have money that they don't care about other people? What an old fool.
