Republicans increasingly say colleges have negative impact on U.S.

New Pew poll:

"A majority of Republicans and Republican-leaning independents (58%) now say that colleges and universities have a negative effect on the country, up from 45% last year. By contrast, most Democrats and Democratic leaners (72%) say colleges and universities have a positive effect, which is little changed from recent years."

This is the dumbing down of the United States, folks. We will not be able to compete on the global stage with this attitude. As a medical school professor, I see how few Americans are getting advanced research degrees in the sciences. A large proportion of our students are from foreign countries, especially the People's Republic of China. The Chinese students used to try to stay in the US but now many of them are returning home because the career opportunities are so much better for them.

They scapegoat anyone, really, who deals in facts rather than facile (usually hate-driven) notions.

The steady defunding of all levels of public education for the last 40 years or so plus the absence of "Civics" courses in Junior (Middle) and Senior High School is deliberate and not happening in a vacuum.
