Like Watergate, this is an era of low comedy and high fear.

This must be what it was like to live through Watergate.
The disorientation, the confusion, the half-truth, the shock, the dark humor. I think of something Elizabeth Drew, the author of one of my favorite books on the era, wrote Watergate was a time of low comedy and high fear. The farce of the story distracts from its horror, and so we take refuge. Twitter is never funnier than when a new Trump-Russia story breaks.
And yet.
This isnt a scandal as we are used to thinking about it. This isnt an embarrassment, or a gaffe. This is a security breach. It calls into question whether Americas foreign policy is being driven by the favors President Donald Trump owes Vladimir Putin for his political help or, perhaps worse, whether its being driven by the fear that Putin will release far more damning material if Trump crosses him.
This is a story that makes clear nothing the current White House says can be trusted. Donald Trump Jr., who enthusiastically tried to work with Russians to upend the election, called allegations that the Trump campaign would work with the Russians "disgusting and phony. His father tweeted, as recently as May 12, that the story that there was collusion between the Russians & Trump campaign was fabricated by Dems.
These are acts that cast doubt on the basic patriotism of the current White House a White House that takes, as its slogan, America First.

(4,608 posts)more destructive, tragic and crucial. This last campaign season, the ensuing election and the Trump regime now ensconced in power (along with this Republican Congress) are absolutely unprecedented in my lifetime.

(3,331 posts)I spent Saturday watching a bunch of Watergate Docs on YouTube.
All I kept thinking was "Is that all he did?" "Holy shit, EVERYTHING trump has done has been so much worse."
And it is.
Did you see Rachel last night? She was talking about how for the sake of democracy we want the Mueller investigation to go slow, but how much more of this stuff can we pile on top?

(967 posts)The way the conversation is yesterday and today, has been an obvious for a long time. I thought we were already here, but seems like just with Jr email, it is the catastrophe of Russia directing our country and policy thru puppet Trump.
It has been a reality for a very long time, before Trump stepped into the office. Today though, hair is on fire.

(12,344 posts)But playing out the same way so far. Long after it was all painfully obvious to objective observers, there was this pretense of normality as laws were passed, wars fought, pundits opined, investigations ground on etc. And ever the steady drip drip of new facts day after day.

(20,828 posts)Trump tells dumb lies, gets caught, and simple tells more dumb lies. Trump's people are such brazen liars and FOX news is perfectly set up to simply soak up lies, and their base is so trained to take a lie...it doesn't seem to matter. I think at this point most in congress even in his own party can't believe their base buys Trump's load of B.S.
