Some of the national press is noted that when the Gore campaign of 2000 was given some Bush briefing materials, the Gore campaign notified the FBI immediately.
Contrast this with the Reagan campaign of 1980--the Reagan campaign was given Carter briefing notes and it made use of them. No FBI agents were called by Reagan and Company.
This is simply one of the major differences between Democrats and Republicans--the Republicans will do anything to win and Democrats follow the law.
Major examples of this tendency include:
Nixon's meddling in the Paris Peace Talks to prevent South Vietnam in North Vietnam from reaching agreement.
Nixon's whole Watergate fiasco. (Also, his ramping up the penalties for marijuana and heroin, thereby disenfranchising millions of people over the years, just to gain political advantage.)
Reagan's agreements with whole may need to hold the American embassy personnel hostage until after the 1980 election--but military equipment had already started on its way to around before our election day.
Reagan's Iran-Contra.
The first President Bush's war against Iraqi, this based on lies ginned up by the Hill and Knowlton publicity firm. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_War
GW's lies about Iraq and it's association with Osama as well as lies about weapons of mass destruction that led us into Iraq.
So, lies about important matters are a matter of course for Republicans. For Democrats -- not so much (an exception is LBJ's story of our ship's being fired on which led to the Vietnam War.
