Because he DID know. (And an number of commentators are already mentioning this.)
Proof:
On June 3, his son received the e-mail promising the Kremlin's dirt on Hillary during a later meeting.
Trump, on June 7, the eve of what he feared might become a contested nomination, promises a major speech on the Clintons in the near future. "Maybe next Monday." (That would be Monday, June 13.)
On June 9th, Trump's son et al. meet with the Kremlin lawyer, three days before Trump's announced speech.
(aside: They obviously figured they needed three days to fit all the dirt into one, semi-coherent speech.)

What are the repercussions when this obvious fact comes to the forefront of the inquiry into potential Presidential criminal acts or misconduct?

"So Dad, I met with the Russians again and they want us to give them some concessions on some sanction bullshit from Obama in exchange for a huge cash infusion to the campaign through several back channel donors...I told them I love it and we are super psyched about working with them. You good with this?"
"Sure thing crushing disappointment...errr, I mean Junior."
