Were you of adult age during Watergate era? What you're describing is sort of the opposite of what happened with the Nixon/Ford thing. Ford didn't achieve any major legislative success from Nixon's agenda, or the Republican agenda of the time. He was perilously close to a figurehead.

He had no chance in '76, and Carter, who didn't inspire all that many independents, won easily, even with an independent challenge from John Anderson.

Taking over for a administration in disgrace is hardly a bully pulpit from which to drive an agenda.

Ford was a toothless tiger. The only thing he accomplished was pardoning Nixon and whipping up a frenzy over inflation (remember Whip Inflation Now, or W.I.N.?) and he got killed come 1976 for that. The Congress wasn't really listening to him and the american people dismissed him out of hand.

And, he was not an unpopular character before any of that. He was seen as a good and honorable man but when he got caught up in the wake of Watergate he might as well have been on the ship as it went down.

I'm sure you recall him being the butt of comics' jokes. Chevy Chase launched his career by lampooning Ford. Ford trips on the steps and now he's a national joke. If it weren't for the stain of Watergate, that never would have happened.

Coming in to mop up the blood after a total disaster of an administration running off in disgrace is not an aid in pushing an agenda

After Nixon, the Republicans knew they were screwed in 1976. They needed a nice, honest, inoffensive man who wouldn't mind finishing out his political career by serving as President of the United States to soothe the country for two years until the Democrats moved into the White House in 1977. Ford was the perfect man for the job.

Ford was calming influence. I lived in Michigan when he ran against Carter. It was made very clear to us in MI that to save auto industry jobs we needed to keep Ford in office.

And a comment here: If this is to happen - Pence needs to resign soon - as eyes are beginning to focus on him and his possible knowledge of the Russian collusion and his possible meetings/contacts with the Russians. He needs to walk out of the Trump administration relatively unscathed. I don't know if that is possible.

I just posted my theory about some of the notable Repugs that are leaving the Party and declaring themselves as Independents.

Kasich seems to be one of the voices of reason within the Repug Party. He certainly has more credibility and likability than the likes of Rubio and Cruz and the other members of the Repug 2016 clown car. Another possibility could be to resurrect Jeb.
