Donald Junior only took the Russia meeting as a thank you to the Russian family that was so cordial to them during Miss Universe.
The Trump family had past and future business opportunities with this Russian family, as well.
So, Jr was just being polite to hold this "brief, uninformative meeting".

They suspected that there was no new opp research on Hillary to come from the meeting.
Hence, Kushner leaving quickly and Manafort staying on his phone during the meeting.
They never mentioned this meeting to Trump because nothing happened and Jr didn't want Daddy mad at him for wasting three of his campaign staffs valuable time.
