At least he can celebrate the Scotch tape brand as American made.

It's true.
And they were photos, not Photoshopped photos. He uses Scotch tape.
And at the time, there were a lot of jokes about "At least the tape is made in America."

(51,584 posts)There is a famous photo of his big, red tie and the tape in clear, plain sight. It may have been at his inauguration. He's coming down his plane's steps and it gets whipped back in a breeze. I'm sure someone here on DU has the ability to post it.
I was writing this and when I posted it I saw the post above my reply.

(50,555 posts)Well, actually it was his Army Secretary, John O. Marsh.
One of his themes was "The Year of Army Fitness." We were all confused. Isn't EVERY year the "year of Army fitness"?
He had "The Year of the Army Family." This was the year the Army cut the separate ration allowance for married troops, and a kid at Fort Ord hanged himself so there'd be more food for his brothers and sisters.
He had "The Year of the Army NCO." This was the year the Army decided no one could be promoted to sergeant until he or she had attended the Primary Leadership Development Course - the course that teaches you how to be a sergeant. It was also the year the Army decided to kick everyone off the E-5 list who hadn't attended PLDC by October 1...that rule got rescinded when they figured out there were more soldiers who needed to go to PLDC than there were PLDC slots in the entire Army.
War story follows: The year after the theme bullshit ended, I got sent to the Basic Noncommissioned Officers Course, which is where you go to learn to be a staff sergeant. Part of the training is the Army Writing Course. "Your assignment is to write an essay on a theme. We will evaluate the essay, give you suggestions, and then you will write another theme using those suggestions." The theme was "The Year of the NCO." (Naturally, I chose to write about the PLDC issue - which was important to me because if it would have gone to completion the Field Station would have had to re-board forty people.) "Sergeant, you can't use the word 'ostensibly' in your essay because no one in the real world uses words like that." So we're sitting there going through the Army Writing Program manual and are told the most important thing is to "write like you speak." I felt like Arlo Guthrie on the Group W Bench..."okay, let me get this straight. I can't use big words. I can't use obscenities. And I have to write like I speak. Make up your damn mind."

(16,072 posts)Especially the kid at Ft Ord! Did you know that the Army barred his father from reenlisting, two years after his son died, and when asked why, the Army said they couldn't reveal the reasons!
Here's the story:
