They have an ally, an oligarch at heart, named Donald Trump.
Vladimir Putin is the king of the oligarchs.
He and his comrades were pissed off to the max when Obama and the US Congress froze their money-laundering operations within the United States. They threatened to stop adoptions of Russian children. This led to the Magnitsky Act and the death of Mr Magnitsky in a Russian jail.
The oligarchs in Russia must launder their money outside their country, to prevent losing it to taxes and other means. The US has had an open door for these money launderers from Russia. Donald Trump is very familiar with them. He can launder money with the best of them.
Putin and the oligarchs have been obsessed about removing these sanctions that came about with the Magnitsky Act. (Adoption was always a peripheral issue) This is what Trump and Putin discussed when they had their secret meeting in Hamburg, Germany. This is what the entire Russia-Trump scandal revolves around. All the secret meetings with Cabinet officials and Russian bankers and Russian lawyers is about opening up the door again to these Russian mobsters. They have no better friend and ally than Donald J Trump.
